which magazines used car report

Extract from the current magazine reads" for an iconic British marque, with both luxury and off road appeal its a shame to see that , once again, Land rover is letting down owners spectacularly. Its models make up four of the bottom five least-reliable cars from this years survey"

My old man, who’s now 87, has been a subscriber from the very beginning, so I’ve always been used to the magazine being available since I was able to read.

I’ve hardly ever found a report worthy of taking too seriously in all that time! They spread themselves so thinly, over so many different machines, appliances, services and products that when it comes to getting serious advice, they’re usually well out of their depth. Yet they talk like it’s come straight from on high!

For instance, looking at this car review episode:

The BMW 3 Series is their pick of “Large” cars. Large car?!
The Disco Sport come at the bottom of the “Large” SUV category, while the Peugeot 3008 and BMW X5 are the Best Buys of the same category. The same category for these 3 cars? Seriously?!
The Evoque is judged in the same “Luxury Large SUV” category as the X5, Q7 and Touareg.
The review on the old RRS says that it “drinks fuel at an alarming rate”, without giving any information about their being a choice of engines and which one(s) they are referring to.

How many of us have filled in one of their survey forms? I’ve usually found that it’s difficult to give meaningful responses to some of the slightly odd questions that they ask, with multi-guess answers, only some of which allow a reply that conveys an accurate answer.

I used to be a Which subscriber and I must admit I got fed up with the model selections and judging criteria.

I contacted them once about a review on cordless drills as they didn't include a Dewalt, I was told it was because they were trade products yet they included a Makita. Both brands available in any DIY store.

The other thing they never took account of is after sales support, could you buy spares etc so they would often recommend generic stuff based on price that you would throw away in a couple of years.

When I read a review I like to see which item has the best performance/quality and not have it down rated because it cost twice as much.

That sounds familiar.

For the next month’s issue they’ll need to be self proclaimed “experts” on fridge/freezers, pensions and I dare say, dog food Rolling Eyes

I tend to ignore stuff like that, even though my Velar has had issues, it’s not a true reflection of my ownership experience. It’s been relatively trouble free, hence I’m now on number 10.

Oh yes, I forgot to add - the MINI Countryman (2010-17), a stupid and ugly fashion trinket, with no discernible merit whatsoever, is one of two “Best Buys” in the “Compact & Small SUV’s and Crossovers” section!

The Discovery Sport is a massive pile of crap, though. Can't wait to get rid of mine. You don't need to read Which? to realise that. Just look at all the replies on Land Rover social media accounts lately. Laughing

When the Freelander 2 became the Disco Sport, I moved on to the proper Disco for a good reason. Personally, I wouldn’t choose a DS, even if it had a perfect reliability record.

What surprised me was that the 3 cars were never meant to compete against one another, yet here they are lumped together as one!

Oh, there’s another gem from this Which? Report. In the “Large car” section (where, apparently, the BMW 3 Series scores more highly than a 7 Series or S Class):

“Large cars, on average, have bigger boots than most SUV’s”.

Gosh. I didn’t know that! And I struggled to get a compact, 2 seater, garden bench into the back of the D5 (tapered C pillars and low roof over the rear seats - argh!). If only I’d though to borrow a 3 Series saloon and my problems would have been over. Good old Which? A mine of reliable information Laughing
