After a bit of messing around, here is the table showing the rates. Engine size is the first column and the annual fee, in euro, is the second column.
What's a very big thing over here is so called commercial vehicles. The D3 is most popular here in commercial form. This is a base model with the rear seats taken out, the floor covered over with a panel, and the rear windows painted over and covered over with alloy plates. By doing this, one can get away with paying only a €50 registration fee (VRT) - I had to pay €20,000 to register my 1 year old HSE when I imported it from the UK. Also, any commercial vehicle under 3000KG pays just €253 in road tax per year.

Thats fair enough, If I want to drive a 2.7 litre 4x4 as opposed to a 2.7 litre saloon car, I pay the same tax. Thats how it should be.
The amount of tax we and you pay is another argument completely.

land rover's sales figure rocked last season. 23 453 total sold worldwide
with the following figure:
North America – up 39 percent
China – up 619 percent
Russia - up 51 percent
Sub-Saharan Africa - up 93 percent
Middle East and North Africa - up 84 percent
Argentina - up 30 percent
as you can see, the most profitable being in China. China get almost the same as the rest of world combined. But yet, there's only petrol model available for China. so i can hardly see the restriction in UK (which is already diesel focused and have much better MPG figure) has any impact to the environment.

If Bliar brings in this £1800/year tax, Ford (or whoever ends up with LR & Jag) should say "s*d you" & pull production out of UK. There will be no UK market left so whay stay here at the whims of this bl**dy government!
Rant over!

They should certainly threaten to move out of the U.K!
It not a "Green" tax it's just another TAX. The sad thing is that most owners of new Rangies, D3's, Land Cruisers etc. will not be that put off by an increase, but plenty of country people who depend upon, their often very old, 4X4's will not be able to afford any increase at all. Without their 4X4 they might not be able to work & some I know couldn't even get to their homes in the winter.
It really is time U.K motorists rebelled against this govt.

I live in the country but I do not depend on my 4x4 to live here.
Its very useful on tractor slimed roads and when it snows, but I don't NEED it.
BUT... I live in a free country (for now), I wanted it, so I bought it. Therefore I am a 'bad person'.
A Golf GTI would do me nice... but then the fuel consumption tearing around will be worse and the CO2 output only marginally better.
Real difference is space, versatility etc etc we know all the plus's to the D3.
Until its illegal to choose the products we own or covet... I will continue to be a 'bad person'
So there !

mmm... did they just add a paragraph post our complaints but left in the offending one too ??
"Planes are not the MPs' only target. They also want bigger penalties for drivers of "gas guzzling cars".
They welcome the recent introduction of variable Vehicle Excise Duty, which means that the lowest-carbon cars pay no road tax, while gas-guzzling 4x4s pay an increased rate of £210"
Seems different... but annoyingly the same.

This just posted on the BBC news site:
Minister hits back...seems like Mr. Ladyman ..is surely only talking about the V8's ...I don't spend thousands more per year ...do you??
Quote:BBC NEWS WEBSITE EXTRACT: "Mr Ladyman said the government did not "rule out doing more in the future" on the tax levels.
But he was not sure that measure would deter people from buying gas guzzlers when they were already prepared to pay thousands of pounds for extra fuel.
He also argued that the speed limit should be based on safety and was not a cost effective way of tackling pollution." 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

The other thing that gets me going is when the greenies start going on about TV stand-by power consumption. And again, the BBC jump on the sensationalist band-wagon.
The tree-huggers claim that a TV in stand-by consumes 25-30% as much electricity as it does when it's on.
Total b***cks
I've checked every item in my house and not one of them uses more than 1% and most are well below ½%.

There is a very, very easy way for the country to save a heck of a lot of energy.
Ever walked around a town at night? Noticed how many shops have got their internal lights and displays still running at full brightness?
Surely getting companies to switch off these lights would be more effective than continuously harassing motorists? But of course, this won't raise money for the government...
What also irritates me is when journalists reporters go all over the world to report on climate change, often just to interview one person or talk to people in one area. I presume they're not walking or using a bike to get there? Radio 1 are doing this at the minute - could they not just use the phone?

Sorry Martin but you'd have to shoot the b***ers that break in to shops (& offices) first. My company was advise that it is asking to be broken into by not leaving full lights on at night.
