Manual Gearbox removal D3

Hi Forum members, In the middle of renewing my clutch on my D3. Do I need to take the gearstick out to remove the Gearbox. Strange question I know but after looking at this website, https://pmmonline.co.uk/technical/clutch-c...discovery/ it says all work is done from underneath. Taken the transfer box off to reduce weight so far but puzzled by the the Haynes manual reference and the website procedures. If any of you good people have been down this road could offer a few pointers be much appreciated. My SWMBO used it to tow my horsebox which I did not think too big a deal, but she maneuvered without engaging low range. An absolute must with 2 horses, clutch well fried now.

While I am down there is the drive belt for the HPFP accessible with gearbox out?. Regards Graham

Pull the gear knob off, unclip the gaiter etc. Unbolt the two bolts at the front, then it lowers down with the gearbox a bit. Then you can remove the clip washer on the back of the lever from underneath, and lift the pin up on the front part of the lever. Then you can just remove it from underneath Smile

Don't lower the box, until it's unbolted. And make sure to unplug the plug, that goes into the gearbox sensor on the top of the box at the front. We missed it, and broke the plug when lowering. This is the one, you can't see. Put your hand up at the front, from under the passenger side area.

Thx VP, I thought it was something like that, trying hard not to make extra work by breaking things. The exhaust crossover pipe bracket is also a concern. I can see why so many get left off. Back in the garage tonight so will bash on.

The brackets where fiddly to get at, but I used a combination of extendables and small ratchets etc. For the gear box, we used a load of long extensions, with one person at the front, guiding the socket on, and the person at the back undoing them.

Just watch out for that hidden plug at the front! Big Cry

I bought a collection of massive 3/8 socket extensions and used them all. Universal joint dead handy for crossover pipe support brackets. Obviously if you have any doubts about your crossover pipe change that too. I did not and now it is whistling...

Beat of luck, it took me 3 days and it stopped being fun quite quickly...

Ouch with the gear linkage coming off. I cannot let this vehicle defeat me. Gear stick out now and cross member bolts. Just got it on the gearbox jack tonight. Will try tomorrow with my son to get Gearbox off. Thx members.

Graham what axle stands are you using, I just picked up a mobile scissor lift and would like to get some big stands for extra support when working under the D3
pricing and where purchased from would be great
Thumbs Up

Hi, I got 4 to support the car while I work underneath. I use them as well as the single post lift. They extend to 1.9mtrs. I have seen these on ebay for less, but for piece of mind its worth it. https://www.datona.de/unterstellboecke-im-...ng-2t.html
