Maximum Load Capacity on Roofrack ?
Hello everyone,
I'm the (very) happy new owner a D3 (MY09) and this is one of my first post on the forum...
Some modification has already been done to the vehicle (underbody protection, side protection, auxiliary battery, 17"" BFG AT tires,...). Now I plan to add a roofrack.
What is the maximum payload on the roof of a D3 ?
Where can I find this information ?
I have the "Panoramic Sunroof" and I wonder if there is a difference in the max payload with or without a Sunroof (I don't want to crack the glass).
I would probably choose Rhino Bars or a Front Runner Roof Rack (the short one because I don't want to see "jail bars" through my front sun roof...).
Is it long/strong enough to put a (small) canevas roof tent ?
Weight of the roof rack (?Kg) + rooftent (50Kg) + 2 persons (150Kg).
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the quick answer.
Is this an official/theoretical limit also valid for vehicle WITH glass sun roof ?
Is it a limit for the whole roof or per leg of a roof rack (for example the FR Roof Rack has 6 or 8 legs depending on its length).
And is there another limit when the vehicle is moving off-road (78Kg seems OK for a roofrack and an empty rooftent and considering that I won't sleep in the rooftent when the vehicle is moving ) ?
i nearly took a picture of a Chris Tyler on a roof rack at the weekend
he also had a Oztent and gawd knows what else up there, so must be pretty good, it was a front runner rackTLO has left the building.......

I have a FR RR and I carry 40 l diesel , 45 l water plus a couple of boxes of spares etc. . I reckon about 120 kg .
No noticeable difference in handling
BTW I have also fitted the FR roof rails , as the OE ones are apparently prone to breaking

Hey Set me Free...
Always nice to see a fellow Belgian join the Forum, welcome.
I'm running also a Front Runner. So if you like I can share some experiences, or if you like a test drive....
Are you planning to leave it on all the time, incl. tent...or...???
By the way, who did your underbody protection? Geoland?

I think the weight issue is more about the centre of gravity than the strength of the rack or roof. Also regarding the glass roof, the rack obviously shouldn't be touching it so it should make any difference.
I've also seen figures quote related to point pressure rather than overall weight, I think it's a bit like lots of things in life, you need to use your common sense. I suspect tying a massive hot air balloon to the rack wouldn't exceed the weight, but it might affect the handling slightly. Equally I think you could stick 200kg of lead sheets on it and it wouldn't break a sweat.D3 HSE MY05 Auto

I would think the max roof capacity stated in the the manual is just for the moving vehicle regarding location of center of gravity and behaviour in turns and so on. It´s not for the actual strength of the roof.
With the car parked it´s another story. Otherwise a roof tent would be pointless... Life in the slow lane

Ive had a lot of heavy stuff on my Front Runner, Spare wheel, oztent, 6 heavy ammo box and it was fine. I had to be a little careful hammering down the motorways in the french pyrenees though.

Thanks Folks for all your comments.
I was fearing of a lower load capacity due to the sun roof.
It doesn't seem to be the case... At least with a good roof rack.
Anyway, as I'm looking to the FR short roof rack (1,6m) because I only plan to carry a roof tent and as already written in my first post "I don't want to see "jail bars" through my front sun roof..."
The rest will be securely tighten in the D3.
I don't want to drive an "airplane carrier"...
Maybe you will give me good reason to buy the long one (2,2m).
For Disco-Doozle, pictures are coming as soon as I have pictures of my D3...
The tent will be stored in good conditions when not in use and certainly during the winter time when there are no LR meetings (which I participate with my old LR Series III-88").
Yes Geoland did the (good) job.
