Nice work.

Out of interest where are you getting your work done? I've recently found a 4x4 garage in Wellington, I'm yet to use them but they're in the small industrial estate in Wellington Marsh, called 'Wellington 4x4'. Loads of Defenders there and I think I'll give them a go next time I'm too lazy to do something myself. Wink

I did it myself, my father in law owns a garage so I have use of it whenever I want. I don't get him to do the work for a few reasons, the main one being he refuses to let me pay him anything which makes me uncomfortable! I do enjoy working on my D3 also, as long as I know what I'm doing!

I've been to Wellington 4x4 quite a few times as he's just down the road from me but never with the D3. I always found him a bit arrogant but just recently when buying bits for my dads 90 he's been super helpful and talkative, so my opinions changed! A bloke up the road has a D3 for work and his company always uses him, in fact they swear by him!

Thumbs Up

Now done, Smile but not without an eventful morning... Just about to start and the MiL phones up; she's got a puncture on her mobility scooter, having tried to take it half way into the woods. Mad Rolling with laughter

Had to crack out the impact wrench on the rear bolts, one of the new front bolts was faulty and wouldn't fit on the socket, and (as expected) exhaust heat shield needed washers.

UJ was knackered as well as the centre bearing, so glad to get it done. Thumbs Up

It's like christmas has come late for Vinnie! Ordered a few bits I've been wanting to do for a while now, and hopefully the new rear discs will get rid of the constant rubbing noise which has been doing my head in!

Considering the awful weather I thought I'd waste no time in fitting the new wiper arm/blades!

Last week I got around to fitting the new Osram Xenarc Nightbreaker bulbs to Vinnie. They are a marked improvement over my last bulbs but a little more yellow than I would of hoped for, my sidelight bulbs and fog/drl's are more white/blue compared to the new bulbs. If I was to buy them again I would probably buy the cool blue bulbs for a better match!

Yesterday afternoon I decided to get around to replacing both diff oils with some nice new Castrol Syntrax Longlife 75W-90.

I started with the rear diff and slackened the filler bolt first

And then the drain bolt

The oil was a horrible brown colour

I cleaned the drain plug and tightened it back up to the correct torque. Then I pumped 1.1L of the new oil in and refitted filler plug to correct torque

Then moved on to the front, slackening off the filler plug first again

Followed by the drain plug

More muddy brown oil just like the rear

And the drain plug didn't look so good this time

I cleaned the drain plug off and noticed this one will come apart........not sure if thats supposed to happen or not?!

Then I replaced the drain plug and tightened to the correct torque before adding 0.61L of fresh oil. Refitted filler plug to correct torque and was job done!

Leading on from the diffs I decided to get on with doing the rest of the service! Pictures aren't great as I was just trying to crack on so I only took a few here and there! I started with the fuel filter, old out

New in

Then the oil filter, I wanted to get on top to see exactly where the spigot should line up with, didn't fancy ruining my engine by getting it wrong!

Pollen filter

And just the remains of the other service bits

Next I moved on to replacing my steering rack, not the most fun things I've ever done but rewarding when it's completed! I lubricated all the bolts a week in advance so it came apart a piece of cake! Again not many pics but you get the idea!

Old out

And new in

New bolt fitted to lower steering UJ

Before I had chance to get the four wheel alignment done it was time for it's MOT, which it failed on the NSF wheel bearing. As I've been really busy with work and had no free time to fit one myself I ordered a new Timken bearing from AV and had it delivered directly to the garage where it had it's MOT. They fitted it and gave him a pass certificate!

I then booked it in at Land Rover to have the four wheel alignment done and the tow bar recall while they were at it. They informed me the courtesy vehicle would be a Discovery Sport which I didn't want so I roped my dad into taking Vinnie in for me and having the Discovery Sport for the day. He then turned up where I was working in this........

I was gutted, and he was vey chuffed with himself knowing how much I wanted to drive a new D4!! Half way through the day I received a link via text message from Listers Land Rover, it was a video for me of my visual health check Cool The only thing they commented on was a lip on both front brake discs, which gives me the perfect excuse to eventually fit the V8 brakes! After collecting Vinnie he now handles so much better with the new bits fitted and the wheel alignment done.

Which left me one last thing to do.......fit these bad boys

Simple improvement but makes the world of difference!

Thumbs Up

I saw they were in stock so I jumped on them! That was always my worry with getting 19" rims, that there would be no stock of them! No better smell of fresh rubber..........or the feel of it over my naked body........I'm off to the shed for a while now!!

Rolling with laughter
