This is a whole new source of concern when buying a used car. Even a 6 month old car with a few thousand miles on it might many thousands of pounds worth of damage to the fuel system and how do you tell?

The chances of this happening must be minuscule

Saw that on TV a few days ago. Glad I use the brew kit in the car.

Just to let everyone know, that the car continues to drive OK with no sign yet of any long term damage. Still keeping fingers crossed. Did inform insurance company just in case!2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey with Ebony Leather, towing a Coachman VIP 575

Says who? It just takes one prior careless refill and it could be me having to somehow prove that I hadn’t mis-fuelled it myself before a warranty claim is passed.2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Agree with Gareth’s post above. Keep on running. You’d have had to replace the fuel pumps eventually anyway so the worst case is a set of injectors. Best of luck!

I did something similar a few years ago when I filled my Range Rover Sport to the brim with petrol, I drove home (about 2 miles) and then the dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree and the engine stopped running, it was at this point that I realised what I had done.
Fortunately I had enough containers to drain the fuel (quite a difficult exercise, as was getting rid of the fuel) I refilled the tank with diesel and added 200ml of 2 stroke oil, had a little difficulty getting it started but had no issues whatsoever in the two years prior to selling it and I towed a huge twin axle caravan.
I hope this puts your mind at rest, everyone told me it would be terminal for all the fuel components but this was just not the case.

Yes, Sister in Law did it on her (then brand new) MY14 Merc A class, drove it a short distance home, she got the tank drained and brimmed with diesel and I dropped in 500 ML of 2SO, still going strong as far as I know

No harm in chucking a litre or two of 2 stroke oil in a full tank. Just make sure its the correct spec.

I asked on this thread in October for examples of engines completely failing after misfueling and had just one reply, this;

Guy at work misfueled his 330d, drained it out and a few weeks later had starting issues due to injector leak off, sussed out which one was duff, changed that then another went down and so on, he gave up and got rid of it.
I’ve since asked around, googled it and get loads of companies and experts saying the engine will be f****d, how they’ll fix it for £££’s, manufacturers charging thousands to rebuild the fuel system following misfueling.
But I’m just not finding any reports of complete engine failures.
Still left wondering just how big a problem this really is.
