Modifying a Dog Cage to Fit in the Back

I have a load separator in my Disco to prevent the gear that I'm carrying flying about in an accident. I also have a Cocker Spaniel who had outgrown his puppy cage and needed more room. The standard cages don't fit and made to measure are in the £300 region.

I've had a go at modifying a cage and it's worked out well. I bought a standard cage for a Cocker Spaniel from Pets at Home (although they're available from many outlets on the web) and in thirty minutes was able to modify it to fit. I used heavy duty pliers to cut some of the bars and to bend those that needed bending. I used a flat balded screwdriver to remove two clamps that held the sides together in the area where I had to bend the frame.

The height of the cage is 620mm. In order to make it fit against the load separator which is raked back, I measured 700mm form the door end of the cage and bent the roof down at 700mm until matched t he rake of the separator. Then I connected the bent roof section to the now raked other end of the cage. A couple of tie wraps held it in place. I trimmed off the gash framework to make it neat and that was that. Total cost £60.00.

There are some photos in my gallery if you're interested.

Does the D3 load separator not fit the D4 then? The one which attaches to the main cargo barrier and splits the boot in half?

I think that we may have a terminology difference here James. My version of the load separator is the big mesh component that fits behind the second row of seats.

I've a springer spaniel and a Jack Russell. This is what I use.

Comes out pretty easy if you need the space.

I use that too for my 2 border collies, only takes 5 mins to remove if needed.

I cant speak more highly of my K9 transit box from one of the site sponsors, i know its a bit more money than some (budget ones or home made ones) but the best part about it............it doesnt rattle or squeak atall!! and removable in less than 10 seconds!

My issue with the LR load divider and dog guard as shown here: http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/use...009060.jpg Is the centre section sits on the join between the 2 folded row 3 seats, meaning that although the section off area is only taking up half the boot you then can't put up one of the 3rd row seats.....K9 used to do a crate that looked fab to do exactly what I want but now seems to be discontinued. Does anybody know of a non LR made to measure/ squeak free/ rattle free/ seat six friendly solution (I know I don't want much Whistle (sorry possible thread hijack going on here Whistle )

You can't put up the seats anyway with just the dog guard in place behind the row 2 seats. I guess you could put up the seats first then fit the guard, but then the passenger(s) wouldn't be able to get out in case of emergency as there's no handle on the inside of the rear door. There's a sticker on the guard warning the seats shouldn't be used.

there are only one company i would use for a dog box there are no rattles noises or anything else the quality is far better than any other boxes from lintran/k9/dogtran etc etc

these boxes can be made to whatever size you want and there are lots of options with the spec as you will see on the web site i will try and take a picture of mine which is full depth of boot height of the back seats and as wide as 2 of the middle row seats and i have 2 pointers in and still room for another dog of same size
