MOT and brake discs

I recently bought a 64 reg Disco 4 from a Land Rover main dealer. It came with a new MOT done by the dealer and I have done only 200 miles since then. I have just noticed the rear brake discs and attach a photo of one of them.


I don't know whether the MOT looks at the state of brake discs or confines itself to braking efficiency on a rolling road. If the former, do we think it should have passed the MOT in that state?

Might not be a fail but that psis poor of the selling dealer especially if its been serviced by them!

Agreed, not a fail under the current inspection regime, however I would expect the condition to be noted as an advisory. From 20th May it could be a fail (depending on the examiner) as the brakes can be failed for the discs being "significantly and obviously worn". Currently the reason for failure on condition reads as "a brake disc or drum in such a condition that it is seriously weakened or insecure".

When I got my D4, the MOT had noted the condition of the rear discs as an advisory (similar condition to yours) and the garage replaced them prior to me taking delivery of the vehicle.

Pre purchase inspection is very important. My D4 was presented to me for sale with similar discs. I did an inspection and negotiated a price before mentioning the disc condition. There was no question from the dealer when I said I wanted all four discs and pads changed prior to accepting it. Even if it costs you some money, if you are not mechanically minded or don’t know the Discovery weak points, it’s worth getting an independent inspection done by a good LR mechanic.

Don’t rely solely on an MOT certificate to give you comfort.

Indeed

I had an RRS in for a service last week. Owner had it MOT’d the week previous, which it passed with no advisories. It passed with a huge hole in the fuel tank cradle, of which it had been advised for the previous 2 years... My D3 Build Thread
