Motorail in France
Planning to head to the South of France this Summer and the Missus is concerned about the little ones on the road.
She has suggested Motorail, looks expensive but has anyone tried it and what did you think?

You mean all those white Renault Clios and Peugeot 106's - nah they'll be alright if you don't hit them too hard...

What do you mean by motorail ? Putting your D3 on a train ?
As long as, in the summer, you avoid the infamous A6 and its traffic jam, everything should be okay...

Having remembered how much cheaper diesel is in France and having had a few bad reviews of the Motorail experience, I think it will be an over-nighter by road and hope that the kids sleep through it.
When I was little we could stretch out in the back of the car with our blankets but alas no more.

You can make sure they sleep through like what my dad did to me and my siblings when I was a kid - my stepmum was a nurse and they laced our bl**dy drinks with sleeping something-or-other - slept right through from the A1 some way north of Paris all the way to Lyon Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

I don't know! the youth of today. They have got Game Boys, DVD's, Ipods, (they even have there own stereo controls in the D3), and they STILL get bored!
When I were a lad, we 'ad to sit on top o' suitcases on t' back seat of dads, Vauxhall Victor, 'cos dad 'ad filled t'boot wit' duty free woodbines, and we 'ad to whistle to keep us awake, youth of today, aye - don't know what 'ardship is.

Motorail is very expensive but very good, only thing in the height limit. No 4x4 unless they have changed it this year. The drive from Calais to St trop can take as little as 9 hours sitting at 95 on the cruise control. Got stopped on they way back on sunday and happily paid my 90 euro fine. My girls are 6 and 4 and are very happily entertained by a 150 quid dvd player for hours on end.

Thanks for all the replies, people, it was the wife that wanted the train
I had already decided to go by road but the decision was made final by the railway company getting back to me to say that although they could now accept people carriers and 4X4s on the Calais to Frejus service, they had to be under 1.8 metres in height.
