Motorhome hire in australia

Hi all
Has anyone any experience of hiring a Motorhome in Australia.
I’m starting to plan our 2021 trip.
We have a cruise booked to New Zealand with two other couples, leaving from Sydney in February 2021. The other couples have relatives to visit in Sydney and Brisbane. We thought, being experienced caravanners, that we might like a Motorhome tour.
So, I’m looking for any useful tips/hints, recommendations etc.
We’re thinking about approx 14 days, ending in Sydney, spend a few days in Sydney before embarkation. So any recommendation on possible routes, tours, things not to miss would be gratefully appreciated. Initially we liked the idea of the east coast, whitsunday islands, barrier reef but a couple of people have suggested Adelaide, Melbourne, great ocean road.
No flights yet booked so can be flexible on pick up location.
Thanks in advance
Steve

Booked our trip earlier this year through Trailfinders (have used them on previous big/multiple location trips & service has been excellent), flights & RV. The rest is via Air B&B as meeting up with friends so found places to accommodate us all.
Flying into Perth, -Sydney onto Cairns then driving Cairns Brisbane then onto Sydney.

Cracking app called Roadtrippers that can help with planning, Lonely Planet guidebooks useful etc.

Had a RV in NZ a few years back & loved it. Only did North Island, left South for another time

Where will you be flying into ?, Adelaide and the surrounding area's are nice with lots of winery's to sample from. Road from Adelaide to Melbourne is dead flat and pretty boring , Great Ocean road and the Otways are beautiful.

Thanks for the replies so far.
Initial thoughts are now leaning towards flying into Melbourne from Birmingham via Dubai.
Connection Times seem to work well.
Then hire a van conversion, drive the great ocean road towards Adelaide and loop back inland past Melbourne and then up the coast towards Sydney. Arrive in Sydney in time to have 3 or 4 days there before the cruise.
This should allow a fairly leisurely pace after all we will be on holiday!
What I want to avoid is driving more than say 250/300 miles every day and not having time to stop and see things. That’s why I think it’s important to research where to aim for to stopover.
After a bit more research will try trail finders to see what they can package together.
Been exchanging emails with Gallivanting Oz. Re van prices, suggested routes and ideas for stop overs.
Any suggestions re other companies to contact?
I’d appreciate any “local” knowledge re what not to miss and suggested deviations and stop overs.
Many thanks.

With the devastating fires in the location of our original planned route, I’m now thinking do I change my plans and add the Motorhome trip to the end of the cruise eg tour New Zealand north island instead
Anyone any thoughts or advice on this?
It’s over 12m till we go and I would rather not change plans as I assume they will be depending on tourist revenue to recover but what if it happens again dec 2020. And will there be anything left to tour and see? Or will we just be in the way.
If anyone has family out there I hope they are / will be safe.
If anyone can give me any up to date advice I’d appreciate it. I can check online but the fires are covering such a large area.

We’re currently in Aus & arrived in Sydney yesterday.
Drove down from Cairns to Brisbane over the course of 2 weeks, found some cracking campsites & things to do.
Adelaide currently still suffering quite badly from the effects of Bush fires, a couple of days rain has eased things on Sydney & the air quality isn’t as bad as we’d anticipated.
We saw smoke in the distance on our way down from Cairns, the only bit that affected us was an off cuff thought of heading to Rainbow Beach which we were advised against, we reverted to our original plan of heading to Noosa.
I get home on the 4th, happy to chat when home if you want.

Motor home was a 6 berth Merc from Maui Campers, could have been better equipped - no blown air to kids in the back so ended up buying a 12v fan, 1 x 15L stock pot, 1 x small pan, a large spoon & a spatula made cooking for 6 a challenge, most sites had excellent BBQ/hot plate facilities. Woolies & Coles for shopping found easily.

Thanks jester
Are you coming home from Sydney or carrying on around to Melbourne?
I can’t decide - cairns to Brisbane or Melbourne to Sydney. Both have pluses and minuses given the time of our visit, length of tour and the fact we need to end in Sydney. It would be nice to hear a comparison.
I originally wanted to do cairns to Brisbane but was put off by a couple of people who said it would be too wet and humid and too far for 2 weeks.
Melbourne to Sydney suited distance/ time but are there the same quality places/things to see?
And now the wild fires! Which are directly on our planned route.
We are thinking, as there are just the 2 of us, of a Maui ultimate van conversion. We are used to Caravanning so feel we could manage two weeks in this type of vehicle.
I may take you up on your offer of contact on your return.
In the meantime enjoy the rest of your trip and keep safe.

We’ve been having a look at the various fire service sites/apps re the fires, whilst not too bad in WA, our near enough 2 months in VIC/SA/NSW might need a bit of a rethink. Big Cry Big Cry

Cairns to Brisbane was our trip over 2 weeks.
Out of that we did 2 long days travel which enabled us to spend 2 days in some places & meant the other days were a max of 3hrs travel.
It was all planned around things the kids would enjoys seeing/doing such as Wallabies on the beach a MT sunrise, turtles nesting & a couple of boat trips.
Friends drove up from Melbourne to Sydney over 2 days, you can do Melbourne to Adelaide in much the same timescale.

A couple of useful sites re fire updates

There’s an area near Melbourne that has just been issues an evacuation order:

We’re looking to head to NZ instead of the SE corner of Aus. It looks fantastic but maybe for another time. Crying or Very sad
