Where to mount a CB radio station?

Hello,

I am planning to buy and install a CB radio to communicate with other cars in a convoi or in offroad terrain.

The main unit should be easily reachable by the driver but must not be maintained during driving. So the best place seems to be on a side of the central console box between the front seats. Obviously, only small radios like the PRESIDENT Bill or similar will fit there.

Is there anybody who has made experiences with mounting CB radios into D3 or D4?

Kind regards,
Stef

I cannot remember the make/model, but there was one available where you could hide the main unit anywhere and all the controls were on the handset itself, so once you unplugged it there was no evidence there was even a cb fitted.

I have an Albrecht from Amazon that fits down between the passenger seat and centre console. It works very well with a long antenna. I will try to get some pictures for you.

I've got a president Bill bolted to the trim under the steering wheel by the little testie vent. Also my full size president Grant ii fits there too.

The Cobra 75 has all the controls on the microphone. The main unit can then be hidden away e.g. under the passenger seat.

I had the Albrecht AE6891 with removable face plate. Main body was fitted under the passenger seat, controls were fitted in the place of the ashtray and an external speaker fitted in the space for a speaker in the top middle of the dash (I didn't have the top level sound system). I found that with the controls on the handset I would inadvertently change channel and wonder why I couldn't hear anyone else.

Thank you very much for your ideas!

Does anybody have experiences with fixing a mounting bracket or radio unit to the trim or the central console box? Do you use self-tapping screws or rivets or threaded rivets? Even when not mounted very near the driver's seat, the radio must be fixed well for offroad driving.

The mini radio models like TEAM Minicom or PRESIDENT Bill or similar are really smart. You can even put them into the cup holders. But they are not that comfortable to use like the "adult" trucker style radios with knobs for volume, channel and squelch.

Our group run digital two way radios which are quiet large, a couple of guys not wanting holes everywhere made a bracket that drops into the cup holder so the radio hangs over the side, for better location off road a couple of self tappers into side of cup holder to stop it bouncing out as main weight hanging

I currently have an Albrecht AE6891 with removable control panel mounted using a custom made clamping bracket on the middle console:

The main unit is located under the passenger seat:

Using a bracket like that, you should also be able to mount something like the President Bill to the console.

Note, as of June 2020, CB radios are subject to the new laws covering the use of mobile devices while driving here in Germany. Thus holding a CB mike while driving will be illegal Crying or Very sad

I have a CB fitted to my D3 its a CRT Mike radio (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CB-MOBILE-RADIO-CRT-MIKE-MULTI-BAND-AM-FM-4W-COMPACT-40-CHANNELS/163293351379?hash=item26050acdd3:g:QIcAAOSwDJNbtMqM:rk:2:pf:0) Its fitted inside the centre box. I have just fitted the mounting bracket with self tappers. All the controls are on the handset so no need to access the main box. There is plenty of room in the storage box and this radio doesn't take up much room. I have wired the radio into the permanent live off my head unit as I was changing the head unit at the same time, you can wire it to the back of the cigarette socket if you prefer. And the antenna wire passes under the centre control pasted the gear stick and through the glove box to a bonnet mounted antenna. I have had this set up for a good 6 months and only get it out when its needed. Nice and hidden.
