Moving from a 110 to a D4...

...and need some quick advice.

I’m tired to people trying to steal all or part of my MY09 110 and so on Monday I’m going to pull the trigger on a MY12 D4 XS that has done 77k. It seems a fair price, has FSH etc and is being sold by an Indy I know well and trust.

I think the deal is pretty much done in my head, and SWMBO is certainly happy to see that back of the 110, but before I commit I’d be grateful if anyone can confirm if the mileage is anything to be concerned about (we’re planning on keeping it for a while) - are they pretty reliable if maintained correctly?

Thanks!

Mike

Welcome to the site! Thumbs Up

Probably the best way to answer that is to give you a list of people to ask, many of which might not be worried by a mere 77,000 miles Wink

The D4 is a great spiritual successor to the 110 in so many ways (yes, really!) and hope you both enjoy it lots Thumbs Up

77k is fine and it should allow you to get a decent warranty. I wouldn’t run one without decent cover, mainly coz of the crank risk. That has no respect for mileage and is a complete lottery. Thumbs Up

In a defender everyone notices you, in a disco no one even lifts their heads its great Thumbs Up

Like all land rovers once they reach a certain age mileage becomes irrelevant and its all about condition.

Cam Belt Change required at 7yrs, which will be an expensive service.

I have evolved from a TD5 disco to a 56 plate disco3 and then a 59 plate d4 and now a 66 plate d4. Each time the car has got better and the experience more pleasurable.

Jumping from my 300TDi 90 and then into the d4 is like going into the future Shocked

Going from a 110, albeit a late model 110, into a d4 will be ace Exclamation
2000 D2 TD5 - big red tractor no longer with us
2006 D3 - no longer with us and sadly missed
2010 D4 alas no more, but a lovely colour (Nara)
2016 D4 about to depart
2022 DS nearly...........

It will be more comfortable, easier and pleasant - but you won’t smile as much as you did in your 110, and you will blend in to the crowd.

Yes, be prepared to be ignored Very Happy
I don’t regret going from my 110 to the D4 they are great vehicles but as said you blend in with it!
No more waving at other Defender owners, no more conversations with random people asking about it but I’m a lot more relaxed knowing that I can park where I want without coming back to bits or everything missing!

I went from a TD5 90 to a D3. Miss the defender when I’m truly off road but no any other time. Like you the main reason for swapping was I couldn’t leave the defender anywhere without worrying if it would be there when I got back.

You can still wave at them, would be interesting to see how many wave back. Whistle

Would be an interesting psychological experiment. See how many instinctively raise a hand, how many peeps have waved back at someone without the foggiest who they are? And also it needs to recorded is the driver blushes or hangs his head in shame at his weakness. Whistle
