MPG AND CATALYTIC CONVERTERS ETC
can i get some advice again please guys
whats the general consensus on MPG and are the trip computers accurate as mine seems to drop like a stone
mine is a 2008 xs auto well maintained and serviced ( see previos posts)
the trip normally says 24-26 running around
can this be improved without knackering the old dear or costing another gold bar
Also being a novice how many cats does this have i cant find any diagrams or part numbers any where for the exhaust system . ? is the DPF part of the exhaust
final question who would be the best supplier for exhaust system as i saw a LR CAT for £2200
Also thankyou to everyone who replied to previous posts

as for DPF ... I don't believe any D3s had them .... but I could be wrong. Has been known.
Several on here have "de-cat'ed" with no downside..

It all depends what “running around” driving is. 24 - 26mpg on the trip is 20 - 24mpg in reality, which is pretty good for cold driving around town but very bad cruising on the motorway. For the former I’d get maybe 18 - 20mpg (reality), latter 30 - 34mpg (reality). Also mpg always dives when the mercury drops, usually by 10%, above figs typical of summer.
And no UK D3’s had DPFs, thanks be to all the gods.

The cheapest and most effective way of improving mpg is change driving style. No amount of tuning, weight reduction, exhaust mods etc will come close.
As others have pointed out, your mpg for "running around" seems about right, though could be improved slightly. My trip shows a couple higher than that. If you're trying to get every last drop and your driving technique is already perfect, driving in manual etc, then weight reduction and tyres are the next. But besides seat removal and harmonic dampeners, there's not much you can do. You're looking at shaving an almighty 60kg off 2400kg...
I run mine on premium diesel but that's mostly because it spends hours per day idling for work reasons. It's also been tuned for about 30hp and 45nm more at 2500-3000 rpm which might help change gear a little earlier but doubt you're getting the money back on the cost of that. Decat? Usual caveat re MOT failure unless you get dummy pipe. EGR blank is a must regardless. Ridiculous systems installed on engines for political reasons only.
Long short, your mpg is fine for casual journeys.

Lorry firms monitor drivers MPG and retrain if it’s poor. Driving style is by far the largest factor in economy in heavy vehicles. Try not to let the vehicle come to a complete stop, rolling on uses less fuel than a dead stop acceleration. I can improve my D3 economy by twenty percent over other family drivers who use the car from time to time. Foot to the floor is fun but costly in a two and three quarter tonne car.Discovery 3 tdv6 HSE 2007
