Do MTRs have to be aired down to work good in sand? There was a sandy grassy hill I tried getting up when I had the mtrs on and couldnt get up it for the life of me. I'm back on my street tires because I've been logging alot of miles lately and tried it again just to see the diffrence and I walked right up it on the 2nd try. I was using the same line and approch speed.

Just done Tunisia trip on 17" road tyres, performed in Saharan sand. TFC had MTRs on and was getting stuck regularly but he was pathfinding and driving a manual!! Both tyres aired up & down as sand conditions required. Horses for courses, both types did well.

I had MTR's on for my trip to the Sahara earlier this year. I was 3rd or 4th in the convoy. So driving over broken trail sand. Regularily got stuck. Even to the point of getting well pi ed off with it. But in the Atlas it was a joy to driveHONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE

I've certainly gone up some hills on pay and play sites with my road tyres where MTR's haven't been able to get up.

Not specifically in sand but the AT2s were having one hellova bad time with punctures. ATRs and MTRs (on one car for each type) had none. My 17" Contis had one.

I always thought MTR's were too aggressive for sand and caused the wheels to dig in? Also agree about AT2's, the side walls are just too soft for any serious off-road use (IMO)2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

I'd be interested to know which tyres you were using - sounds like they did well.

Conti 4x4 Contacts. Only got stuck twice, 1st time following TFC over some big dunes, up the steeper lee side TFC pulled me out. 2nd time over small hump when brain was switched off Ran at 20/25psi front/rear in sand but went as low as 15/20 after got a bit bogged down after fecovering TFC on 2nd day. The cry of "Spicy Meataballs" went up dropped pressures and dug myself out.
Was very please with the Contis, picked up 1 puncture but these were well offroad abused tyres, tough as old boots and certainly tougher than AT2s.

not too aggressive but the tread pattern does cause greater breakup of the surface, not so much a problem for the vehicles with MT/R's on but can be a problem for following vehicles if they have to use the same wheel tracks, dropping the pressures helps (I was running at 15 front, 20 rear whilst all but NJF were at 20/25) but that also increases the risk of dismounting a tyre and overheating the sidewalls. Reasons behind running MT/R's were 1. not all the terrain was 'clean' sand, 2. being lead vehicle, if there were hidden rocks etc. i'd be hitting them first so a stronger tyre should hopefully reduce any damage. Obviously i'd try and warn the following vehicles of the obstacle to prevent them damaging tyres. 3. I already had two spare MT/R's, all six tyres were moderately worn so if I lost one or two it wouldn't be as galling as near-new AT/R's
It's worth noting that all the punctures suffered were as a consequence of driving through desert scrub, at times it was quite dense and the avoidance of punctures was just as much due to luck as judgement and getting the right line, no punctures were suffered as a consequence of hitting stones or other debris.
I ran MT/R's on both Morocco challenge events, in a mixed terrain environment it pays to use a tyre suited to the harshest driving surface even if this compromises the driving on other terrains

two trips to tunisia just under 8000 miles on ATRs and no punctures, but the sidewalls do take a hammering Its not the height of the fall but the sudden stop at the bottom that hurts!!
