How much weight can be attached to the hitch?

Hi
How much weight can be attached to the hitch? I’m thinking of adding a 125cc scooter on the back using a rack and then maybe hooking up a caravan. Any thoughts would be welcome
Regards Kev

D3 is 150kg iirc.

You'll want to use about 100kg of that for the caravan, so unless your scooter is less than 50kg, no.

I’ve seen it done the other way, hook up the caravan as normal and add a little platform at the rear of the caravan to support the scooter, no doubt there is a proper kit available specifically for this purpose. Any variance in load can be re-distributed by moving stuff about inside the van to maintain the car and caravan recommend nose weight.

Thumbs Up

Australia

In Australia we are rated at 350kg and that is for a detachable unit but our detachable is different to yours.

The vehicle is the same, the towbar slot in the rear X member is the same - the only difference is the "plough".

Your going to need a Caravan with a long drawbar to have any sort of turning circle left with a scooter between the car and van.

I'd be tempted to put the scooter in the van.

I'd love to find out what there is at the rear of a trailer caravan to attach anything more than an adhesive sticker to. On most of them even the chassis does not reach fully to the rear, and the corner steadies are just attached to the wooden floor.

Saw the exact kit When we were on the CC site at Brora this year, fitted to the chassis of the van, it had a small motorbike on the platform which even had a mechanised unit for raising or lowering the platform, it was a German outfitt!, pity I didn’t get any pics.

FYI the 4 corner steadies on my ALKO chassis are actually fitted onto the chassis Thumbs Up

The discovery is one of few that has the towing capacity of 3.500kg or so I’m lead to believe.

One thing one needs to aware , is that anything that is fixed to the hitch and has a Centre of gravity behind it, such as bike carriers etc, will load the rear axle more than just the hitch load. If the total load is well up to the limit ( equivalent to 7 passengers +luggage) , a visit to a weighbridge might be in order. The max axle loadings are on the weight plate.
