multiple electronic parking brake failures |
|
Hello all,
After purchasing my first D3, three days after owning it the EPB failed resulting in me having to pull the emergency release.
Using the forums I found how to re-engage it and after doing so successfully I was happily motoring around for a few days until it failed again resulting in having to pull the emergency release once again.
On both occasions I was parked facing up a hill and the previous owner told me this is a common fault and happens alot. Always make sure that the engine is off, leave it in gear and once its rolled back into the parked gear then engage the EPB.
Is this legit? or am I missing an adjustment somewhere? Seems to me that if thats the case then the shoes probably need adjusting or something but he assured me this was all done last year. I should also note he had just repaired the EPB himself (hes a mechanic) replacing a broken gear on the worm drive.

It does sound like you need to remove the brake shoes, ensure the pivot is free which connects to the cable. (or just replace the shoes if your having this many problems)
Then adjust the shoes as per the bible on here.
Before you start, release the park brake.
If you have a GAP IID, put the module in service mode. (this should give you move slack on the cable)
Remove the EPB fuse from under the bonnet. On a manual you are bound to accidently apply the brake, which will be a right pain to you if its in bits at the time

If you simply rep-latched the cables, it’s inevitable that it will jam on again I’m afraid.
As above, strip, clean, adjust and replace parts as necessary and all should be good
Unjammed 2 today for 2 different customers and both had parts failed hidden behind the brake shoes that were the underlying issue. Replaced broken springs, clips etc, new shoes, discs and pads and all good.
4 more to do this week (I must be mad !)
