Need a fridge for my D4??

Hi,
we are planning some wild camping trips around the Scottish Highlands, a fridge would be an essential piece of kit, however I do not know which one to go for, it is only for me and my wife so do not need nothing too large. Any advice would be great.

Also will I need a split charge system etc? or can I just plug it into the 12v socket in the boot?

thanks for your help.

engel or nationa lunar - both are good and both will have their fans for and against.

if you intend to have the fridge running continuosly then you will need an aux battery with split charge.

ive had an engel MT35 for 7 years now and its still going strong - for the first 3 years it ran continsouly in the car 24/7 at around +1c

Would strongly recommend an aux battery + split charge. Although the current they use is low enough to not flatten the battery overnight, it is still a load I would not be comfortable having on my main battery.

Thanks for the info gents,

I would like to go for a split charge system however I would not be keen on the aux battery sitting in the boot or a load of cables running about the disco, I am a lawyer during the day and an off roader at the weekend so would like any modifications as subtle as possible. My mechanical knowledge is rather limited to say the least so is there any advice on the split charge system and how it would work and where it could be fitted.

Any and all help would be appreciated!! Thumbs Up

Cheers.

Good compressor 4x4 fridges do not come cheap!

12volt/gas/240volt fridges are caravan type fridges and do not cope well being used with the angles that can be achieved whilst off roading.

Absorption type cool boxes are energy hungry and can flatten a battery overnight.

There are four main recogonised fridge names in the 4x4 world.

ARB, Waeco, Engel and National Luna

Some points to consider

Volume, actual internal volume. A good size is about 45-50 litres.

Please note that the figures that some manufacturers name has no relationship to actual internal volume.

Current consumption? Find out what the actual average current consumption is. A good fridge will be less then 1 amp/hour.

Low battery monitor. Some fridges have them inbuilt, others are an extra option. To me an essential item.

Temperature setting? Is it an actual temperature setting or arbitary number on a rotary pot?

I've got a Waeco 50l fridge freezer. It can be a fridge or a freezer or both. I've had it 4 years and it lives permanently in the back of my car on a split charge. It means we can do our cold shopping and not worry about it or when camping means ice cream and cold beers Very Happy

We also use it as a second fridge / freezer if need be. Highly recommended. Thumbs Up

I have a National Luna 50l Weekender, which is 40l fridge and 10l freezer. This also has a battery monitor which can be set so you don't drain your battery. I have a National Luna split charger and auxiliary battery fitted as well. This was bought for our wild camping for just the wife and I, and I found it the perfect size. There was no competition for space, for food vs beer. Thumbs Up The freezer was nice to carry some frozen steak for the latter part of the trip, and of course the ice cream. Who said camping had to be rough. Thumbs Up

Cheers

If you are planning to spend longer than one night/day in a single place, then you will need a recharging device such as a Solar panel. My auxiliary battery is fine to run the fridge for one night, but if staying for the day and another night, the battery needs topping up. Just something to think about.

Cheers

I currently have a D2, so have a bit of extra space in the back for a battery. Also have a 120w semi flexible thin solar panel on the roof, running through a CTEK D250S which blends alternator and front battery feed and solar input. 65l Waeco CFX never gets turned off. Panel tends to hold the fridge up all day in summer, even when set to -15c.

The D4 roof would take 2x120W easily. That should be enough wattage especially if the panels are kept clean. That CTEK has a maximum input of 20A, so 240W is all it could take.
