My New Discovery 3

Hi All,

After months of searching i finally bought a disco 3 HSE. Have a look the pictures.

Would like to hear your thoughts on the car. Driving it back on Saturday night from Devon i had a blow out with a rear tyre, see pics, Stuck on the M6 / 74 with parts of the jack missing. Hazards were on for a couple of hours which killed the battery.

After a 3rd try i get through to green flag. 30 mins later a mechanic turned up called Mike from Dumfries to save my bacon. Changed my wheel over jumped the battery and sent me on my way. Big Thank you Mike.

He had never seen a blow out like it. This thing just exploded but no reason why. anyway after 23 hours on the road i finally got to bed at 4:00 am. Started out at 5:00 am the day before.

Even after all that i was up early to gut out my pride and joy. Took everything out. Hoovered everywhere, cleaned and polished all the leather. then gave the body work a bath with Demon Machine Rapid Dirt Shifter 1L. fantastic stuff.

took away all the algae and mould and grime off the paintwork. Then washed her down with autoglym snow foam. Dried her off. 8 hours later a fab looking disco. End of Phase 1.

Phase 2 this Saturday when i goto Gibsons in Cumnock for a health check and a chat over a bacon butty and cup of tea to discuss what to add mod wise.

One thing i was amazed about. i got up to 35.8 mpg

after the 500 mile trip from Devon. Best i have ever had from a disco 3. i wonder if it has been remapped. How would i know?

Also tipped the 100,000 mark on the way home.

Loving the new purchase LRV DAV Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Not so good about the blowout, does look like it was a very nasty one at least you are both in one piece.

That's a fair distance to go for a car Laughing Laughing

Nice looking car. You certainly know how to burst a tyre!!
At a guess it looks as if it delaminated. You only bought the car so no way of knowing but my guess is that tyre was driven flat for a long distance at some stage and it delaminated on the inside but didn't puncture, so was pumped up and all looked fine until your bang. A neighbor showed me a tyre that had been driven almost flat for about 10 miles. It looked perfect on the outside no indication whatsoever, no mark no scrubbing at all but inside all the cord ply treads were fully exposed. You could put your hand in behind two layers. My local tyre place takes all tyres off now to look at the inside if they have a puncture.

Out of curiosity - what all do you need to get fixed? 3500 GBP or 4000 EUR is quite an amount.

u name it i need it. I will post the full list tomorrow night once i have typed it all out. for example i need 4 new tyres, pads all round, gearbox flush and filter, all suspension parts, airbag light is on, fogs don't work, cruise control has a fault, etc etc. full list to come. all help and suggestions appreciated. If i have to put it off the road for a few months i will. At least i know if i do all the work it will be a very sound disco. all the plans i had for modifications will have to wait.

just checked the bf goodrich website. they say they do not supply any tyres to suite my disco 3 2005 hse. Is this true. Confused

surely not. i have purchased landrover 17" wheels so I can use bigger tyres.

Can anyone shine any light on this subject?

Sorry to hear that mate. Interested to know what is wrong and more importantly looking how do tell? I'm looking but want to learn who to avoid your mistake.

Guessing the seller doesn't want to know? Shows how important having someone who knows look at them before doing the deal.

LRV DAV,

We took it to our local garage to get checked over before going away on holiday with the caravan for peace of mind but it came back with 52 faults (not to sure how many are historical and not been cleared) didn't manage to get a print out as the garage's printer wasn't working, and the clutch was slipping. The one fault that the local garage said was possibly causing some other ones was the steering wheel angle sensor (i think that's what he said anyway). Among other faults we wanted looked at were the parking sensors as they didn't seem to be working properly and the brake lines were not secured after being changed.

Luckily when we took it back to the dealer we bought it from (still within the 30 days) they agreed to replace the clutch as by the time we got there it was stinking and would look at the list of other faults we gave them as well as the faults the car diagnostics threw up.

Not sure what garage it currently is at since the first garage they took it to had it for two days before saying there ramps/lifts couldn't take the weight of the Discovery and other garages they tried didn't want to do the job as it was a nightmare to do. We've been told to phone back on Mon to get an update but it may be Tue by the earliest that we will get it back. Dealer did say that is costing him at least a grand to get the clutch changed and other faults looked at.

Needless to say we had to cancel the holiday much to the upset of our wee ones.
