If you think of 60% as your BATNA (assuming it’s guaranteed already) you don’t have much to lose to ask for some more, do you? Whistle

(And in any case, congratulations!)

Had this issue with 2 ford vans, both needed new engines and all servicing had been done by ford main dealer, 1st one i got a 70% contribution on 2nd one i got 95%, also because i have paid towards the cost they both now have full manufactures warranty on them. It doesnt hurt to ask for a bit more Mr. Green

How long do people expect a 3 year, unlimited mileage, warranty to last?! (Clue - The answer is in the question!).

While it’s disappointing that any engine could let go after 34,000 miles, LR have supported this car above and beyond any reasonable commitment, by contributing 60% of the cost of repair to a very well used car at a point way beyond the expiry of its original warranty. To come back and ask for the same again (or more), 5 1/2 years later, is amazing!

This car is no longer LR’s responsibility.

Personally I think a brand new engine should last more than 5 1/2 years and 54000 km.

But this is on a car that is 9 years old, with 249,000 miles on the clock. Warranties don’t start again once a component has been replaced.

I do agree with you w.r.t. warranty of the whole vehicle. They certainly do not start all over again.

If JLR replaced a failed engine with a new one they also gave it (the engine) a two year warranty (I think). In the European Union, the manufacturer’s warranty does not replace consumer protection or laws, it can only complement it or be better. Also, generally, an engine is thought to be designed to last more than 54000 km. As a consumer, at least here, you’re allowed to expect that something lasts for a certain period. Whatever it is is usually not defined in law.

Whether the consumer is “right” is down to a. His skill at negotiating, b. Manufacturers’s interest of doing something, or c. failing that the legal system if it comes to that (and usually it does not since the consumer cannot realistically sue a big company in EU; we are not like USA in that regard).

Well done for getting what you wanted, though I fear that’s a fair amount of “goodwill” used up at LR; let’s hope it doesn’t make them that much more defensive the next time a 4 year old car, with considerably less than 250,000 miles, breaks.

Disco5 I'm delighted for you, not just the result but the speed with which it came.

It's a result totally at odds with the experience of countless others on the forum, which is as baffling for me as it must be welcome for you. There have been so many instances of flat refusal on cars less than a year out of warranty that this outcome will have more than a few gnashing their teeth!
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

But I expect they are still making money from the sale. They don’t sell engines at cost do they!

I still think it’s disgusting engines are letting go that early if they have been maintained to the manufacturers spec. It’s embarrassing for the brands reliability.
