New EPB shoes at 34,000 miles |
|
Had rear discs put on and was advised to have new EPB shoes as leading shoe was breaking up.....surely they should last longer?
I saw with my own eyes the damaged shoe

From my limited technical knowledge it's very rare that these pads need replacing, especially at that age and mileage.

In theory they should not need changing as the only use they get is in fact when the hand brake is applied nothing is moving so no friction but if they get contaminated or become hot for any reason then they can break down Discovery 3 se gone

Didn't replace mine until 99k miles and they still looked as though they had plenty of life left in them (on a D3, mind).

It could be that some of the other components have broken down causing premature wear. When I renewed mine the nearside shoes were only held on by the cable, the clips that hold the shoes to the back plate had completely disintegrated. I'm amazed my epb was still working. Having said that, mine had covered 105k and I do use my epb all the time. Discovery 4 HSE

I changed mine last week as offside was getting hot, turned out the lever that attaches to the cable was seizing at the pivot on the brake shoe, rubbish design.
Not sure if shoes were original as car has done 113k, they certainly looked like they had been on there a considerable time, so quite likely.

Mine got changed at 26k, my pads were getting done and the shoes were breaking up, so it was suggested best to change, which I did. Didn't really think too much about it TBH and still don't. Think you did well getting over 34k out of it.
