My new Land Rover

well new to me......

Tonight I have purchased a 1990 County 90. I should be collecting it on Saturday. It's a 2.5TD with only 56,000 miles. See my gallery for pics of my toy.

Even though I'm really sad to see the D3 go (when a buyer comes along Embarassed), I'm quite excited about having a Defender - well a 90. I've never owned anything like this before. My first Land Rover was the RRS, then got the D3.
So, I'll be looking to get a second set of wheels/tyres for off-road use and adding some minor upgrades. Maybe some underbody protection. Probably a very load stereo and large speakers to mask the road noise. A bit of rust proofing. And a veggie oil conversion, so I can run on neat Tesco value pack cooking oil.

Now just got to sell the D3 and then get an estate car for work/family.

That looks very tidy indeed Matt.

From the photographs, I would say never seriously off roaded. Does the difflock work as they often seize through lack of use. Easy fix though and a good negotiating point (although you have already done the deal)

Hi Matt,

it looks good. It doesnt look as if its been offroad at all. Soon change that !!!

As I mentioned in the june wilts forum, Ive got some muds if you are interested. If you wanted to borrow them for wilts to try-before-you-buy you are more than welcome. Thumbs Up

My Defender was pretty much similar when I bought it. Then modified it and its now virtually unstoppable !!, PM me if you need some advice...

Looks very nice d3matt. Stick some HSE alloys on it and you'll never tell the difference Laughing

It does look in very good nick. I'm no Defender expert and so how can you all tell it's never been used off road? Just curious Confused

Good luck with the D3 sale.

Yes I will need plenty of advice. The whole Defender thing is completely new to me. I'll have loads of silly questions to ask.

So where is the best place (i.e. cheapest place) to get Defender bits & accessories?

I need to buy the following items to start with:

- Rear mudflap
- Rear boot liner/mat
- Front floor mats & soundproofing
- Rear door lining trim
- Possibly some underbody protection - need advice on this.

I have Frogs Island just down the road from me, but never been there.
I've found www.johncraddockltd.co.uk and http://www.exmoortrim.co.uk which seem good.

Having a couple of defenders

- Rear mudflap
Ebay is usually good for these, otherwise I always found these guys excelent http://www.lrdirect.com/customer/home.php

- Rear boot liner/mat
As above and Exmoor

- Front floor mats & soundproofing
Soundproofing -http://www.wrightoffroad.com/
also see this link for some good ideas, camping mats work a treat http://www.freewebs.com/kgivo/soundprooflinings.htm

- Rear door lining trim
- Possibly some underbody protection - need advice on this.
both of the above http://www.rebel4x4.co.uk/

HTH Matt

Radio is pointless unless you get some good soundproofing.

1. Things I would do are, timing belt (easy DIY job) - see link N/A & Turbo are same http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=7880 (also great site for good advice)

2. Oil change & filter change, fuel & air filter(2.5TD get a bad press but looked after and not abused will last)

3. Check tappet clearances (10 min job)

4. Renew axles oil (EP90)

5 Renew tranfer box oil (EP90)

6 New gearbox oil (ATF dextron II or III) yes I know its a manual

7 New swivels oil (one shot grease is good)

8 No need for 2 sets of wheels some decent ATs and you'll do a D3 any day
