Thumbs Up

Feel your pain. Big Cry

What frustrates me is that this is a design and manufacturing fault that LR has never taken responsibility for. Twisted Evil

I know, but it’s lasted nearly 8 years and 118k miles, so that’s life I suppose. First big bill this car has had.

I'm interested to know, is this something that happens to all model years or did they change the design/manufacture at an stage in the late life of the D4? I'm trying to start preparing myself.
Cheers

It seems to be pretty inevitable at 100k+ miles. Looking at the old part, it has a very small crack on the shoulder of a tight radius, in the middle of manifold, at the point where greatest stress would be felt when the turbos kick in.

It would be an interesting exercise to see age and mileage of failed manifolds. My Indy who did the work said he had quite a pile of old manifolds that he had changed over the past couple of years. No common pattern though. Sometimes the left goes first, sometimes the right, occasionally both.

Thanks. What sort of cost is a repair at a good Indy?
Yes , it would be interesting to understand this. Age, mileage, type of driving etc. Obviously has to do with heating and cooling, so perhaps there are journey lengths that cause it to fail more. Need a metallurgist /aircraft engineer view. You would think LR would have some data or try to gather it.
Is this something other vehicles fail with or unique? Might be design/construction related. D5?
So much LR could do if they put their minds to it.
Cheers

It's made of plastic and is a known manufacturing fault. I doubt the type or length of journey's have anything to do with it. Both mine went under heavy load whilst accelerating. One at 6 1/2 years (129k) the other at 7 1/2 years (142k).

Could they be strengthened before they break ? Have to say seems very shoddy for this to happen. However I dare say not all do either , so just your luck Very Happy it’s either the crank or the manifold

Thanks Moo.
Plastic! Doesn't sound up to the job. Didn't realise. Good old injection moulding. Had an issue with a duct that kept cracking in the same place in my gas boiler.

I have my 107k 2015 d4 booked in for new belts in December. Is it cost-effective to do manifolds at same time, or better to just wait..?

It’s the convulated shape and the additional other parts that hang off it that means it has to be a moulding (or so I was told by the same Indy that replaced Gareth’s)
Intake Manifold on my Golf and wife’s Polo are also plastic as was the Manifold on the Sigma engine I put into a Caterham, all three looked a hell of a lot more straightforward to replace than on a D4, but not heard of any systemic failures like a D4. Wonder if a D4 Manifold could be 3D printed in a more robust material?
Now Golf GTI PP, 7 speed DSG.
