New Purchaser

Sad I am just about to say good bye to my little Jeep and welcome a Discovery 3........Then I discovered this site.
Please, please, please tell me that all the moans and groans I have been reading are just a small number in a large purchase pool.
New turbo ,new pads @ 12,000mls, new tyres @12000, slow turn round of fault repairs and plenty of electronic and fuel gripes.
The fuel is not a worry as I am getting the diesel and that needs a little T.L.C to reach a good MPG but the rest I could live with out as my milage will be faily high.

Welcolme to the best D3 site in the world.

Forget the moans and groans, yes they are there, that is why the site thrives, to help each other. Never has a vehicle been so thoroughly documented around the world. Compared with your Jeep you will find the D3 awesome.

Out of interest, which model was it, Cherokee or Wrangler?

My mate has had more problems with his Cherokee than my DS3. The actual problems are few and far between, it is more niggles. You've bought the best car on the market you will love it.

BTW not heard of turbos going only hoses coming off, not heard of anyone needing new tyres after 12K miles unless they have been punctured and I haven't heard of pads either anyone throw any light on this Question

You won't regret your decision it is a fantastic vehicle even with the niggles and you won't necessarily have any or all of them. Touch wood I've had very few problems and mine was bought in Dec 04.

new purchaser

Well that got people talking Wink
Jeep Cherokee is my departing 4x4 and other than a few minor moans, no prob's. Fuel came in at around 32 but like the Discovery that only arrived at about 20/30000 miles.
As for the turbo that was posted by ymcgminer. While waiting for a repair a fault appeared , waste-gate electronic failed, resulting in a new turbo.
Pads are also on here some were. Tyres were changed by our local supplier after a rather heavy off road session.
As you say....after driving the Discovery who the hell cares, it was MAGIC Laughing

If nothing else, it will get the neighbours talking! I still get folk asking me about the car in fuel stations/supermarkets. If you ever get it off road, you will be even more amazed.

I have an early model, and electronics are fine now. Initially I was very concerned.

Hey PIP, you're gonna love it. It's so easy to use, you'll keep pushing it's limits for a long time.
You have to remind yourself once in a while "careful: this car is heavier than it seems"

You'll achieve 32 (and better) much quicker in the D3, I rarely drop below 32 now unless I'm doing a lot if town driving and mine's done about 4000 miles

The last few days on this site have given me a bad case of the sceaming nerves.
Failed gearbox, suspension, software.electronic. poor fuel, poor service, poor finish, poor back up.
It got to be so bad I visited 2 L.R dealers 40 miles apart and had a wander around.
10 D3's in for work...7 brokedown or major work, 3 for service.

It's great to drive, looks fantastic, feel very safe but is it trustworthy?

Please don't all shout at once my nerves will not stand it.

Who knows! it differs from vehicle to vehicle, some have had loads of problems, others like myself (touch wood) have had very few. It seems that the electronics play a large part in most of the problems, my theory is that the more gadgets and gizmos there are, the more complex it becomes to get everything working in harmony. Waiting for something to happen will take the edge off your enjoyment, you never know you might be lucky because in theory the later builds should have more of the problems ironed out.

wow that was quick.
It's only nerves, I've never spent so much on a motor but this beast just has to have the greatest WOW factor going.
If I stop listening to the sale guy and just stick to the basic (as I did with jeep) perhaps there is less to worry about.

Scotland 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 Base 7 Seat Manual Buckingham BlueDiscovery 3

look at any marque / owner site and you'll see the problems each vehicle is facing. People tend to discuss the few problems extensively- whereas those without problems have nothing to say and therefore don't post.

I've never spent half as much before on a car, and like you was rather anxious that the family pennies would be well spent.
So far (after three days)- no problems except for an erratic fuel flap lock.

I must say that I've not been tempted by the higher models- there is a lot of extra gadgetry in the price span between my base 7 seat and a fully - equipped HSE. The price difference between £29,000 and £43,500 top of the range includes lots of complex stuff to go wrong! (and before the pedants point out, I am aware that some of the extra spec in HSE is non- electronics such as fancy alloys, leather, Alpine windows, sunroof etc).

If you are feeling brave- suggest a poll along the lines of "how many of you have had no electrical / mechanical problems" or such like.

In this day and age with the demands for technology, anyone would be very lucky for a problem free anything.

Several of my mobile phones have had bugs and been replaced within hours for example, TV, cookers, fridges, builders etc.

That's another busy weekend over with.
Monday it's of down to the L.R dealer to say 'What I really want is a D3 basic 7 seat'. No bells, buttons or whistles.

I'm going to take a camera because in this area anything less than all singing, all dancing will make him go a very funny colour.

Them i'll say that DISCO3.CO.UK said DO IT.

What ever colour he turns, I want the Disco in it.

Then roll on one of your away days.
