Got a rattle coming up through the steering wheel, reported this to the dealer as my car was in having a new compressor fitted. Now done 38967 miles and needs a new steering rack. This is going to be replaced under warranty.

When off roading, the steering rattles a bit anyway. Do you use a lot of rough roads??

My car could be on a motor way one minute and then up to its ass the next. I expect rattles and the like when on rough tracks but not on normal roads. My dealer has reported the fault to Land Rover and they have agreed to replace the steering rack.
Oh by the way what do you think of the mud flaps or should I call them self destructing mud ploughs. Im on my 2nd set of fronts and third set of rears had the first few sets replaced under warranty but I had to buy the last set.

What you have just highlighted is a another concern I have had for a while. When the car is extended for off road use, the steering linkage is moved in and out. As a result is must wear, which in turn must cause play. I have noticed it on mine when off road all be it mildly and mine has done no miles.

As with most cars, as you do the miles you will get used to the play in the steering, gearbox and drive train. I noticed the play at about 20k and its been getting worse, to a point that when overtaking I would try to avoid the cats eyes.

If its that bad, it shouldn't be on the road. Just how much play have you ?

The rattle will be a loose universal joint in the steering column. Land Rover are aware of the issue and they will replace the entire lower steering column under warranty. Mine has been fine since (5000 miles). Disco 3 TDV6HSE Cairns blue auto

Yes, this has been well documented on the site over the months, but andrews sounds rather more dramatic
