I've suggested he contact JLR but currently he hasn't approached them and is going for a used engine out of a car that's only done 40k... I think with the mileage on his current car JLR will simply say "no" but nothing ventured... the total he said was £7.5k with the engine from Kent 4x4 breakers...

Are they really as bad as others I dont know - Ford transits suffered with something similar. I read somewhere that its actually less than 2% of Discos suffer with broken cranks, if the figure was higher it would trigger a recall. I'm not in anyway validating this, rather repeating what I have read somewhere else. Its also worth remembering that joining forums such as this, as excellent as it is, one of the main points reported are people having issues with theirs, that's why a lot of people join such forums - for advice on a problem. A rebuilt JLR short engine will be £13k minimum fitted plus most likely two new turbos! Not exactly small change . Must admit those that belittle the issue must think the failure rate is acceptable and also have not had to contend with the issue. I hope they never have to or they may feel differently about it.
Its an issue that JLR have allowed to carry over in to the D5 , they seem happy to pick up the early failures as the higher mileage ones they can turn their back on.

Please give an example of any other premium car manufacturer with as high a failure rate of such an expensive to replace component! That have not made any effort to rectify that problem . If it had been a safety component they would have been forced into a recall a long time ago.
Ford stopped using that lump ages ago until they came up with a fix. Why didnt JLR start using the revised set up? Maybe they factor in that they may only end up having to pick up the cost of a small percentage of failures ! However for those that dont get goodwill face the prospect of having to write off what they paid for the vehicle or spend up to its value again to repair often whilst still paying off the finance outstanding.
In China and I believe Australia JLR are legally obliged to replace these engines FOC

Porsche bore score?

Off course it’s bad, I had to replace my D3 engine way back in about 2010 or so, yes it is a painful experience, but I have since had 2 D4s and a RRS with 3.0l diesel, what else do you buy? I even tried an Audi SQ 5 before buying the RRS, sat in it but didn’t even bother starting it!

Yep, bore score on the 997.1 911's, I have one, as well as the Disco, so I guess I just like living on the edge! Laughing

I've had my 911 for 4 years and it's been faultless, it had suffered bore scoring just prior to me purchasing it so had just been rebuilt, but there's nothing to say it won't happen again, it was on 49k when it happened last time and it's now on 76k.

Crank shaft failure, can it happen? yes. Is it a given? no. I would never have one of these cars without a full LR warranty, my car was bought from my local dealer and has never been anywhere other than there since I bought it. If the crank goes i'll expect them to cover 100% of the cost. You tend to find that there'll be certain people who post in each and every thread on the subject which can make it seem like it occurs more than it does in reality (this happens on the 911 forums with bore score, same people posting all the time about it, some of which haven't even had the issue!).

This is my 3rd Disco4, my first one had crank shaft failure at 82k miles and wasn't covered by a warranty.

As others have said, there's nothing on the market that compares to the D4, so I'm sticking with mine for a while.

So motoreasy seems reasonable to protect costs for crank failure but you're still 50% contribution when over 90k on the clock. They specifically state component contribution so not sure that's verbatim or labour contribution as well. 2 things that arent specifically mentioned in what they cover are turbos and anything suspension related (compressor, strut units). Offsetting cost of warranty per year against engine replacement still makes sense in my book and will be taking out a policy with them pending answers to a couple of questions.

Like most warranty companies Motoreasy limit any claim to the value of the car.
I don't know what the likes of Oval Autos charge for a crankshaft job but I suspect it would be a close run thing where my 10 year old 62K D4 is concerned.

All the parts to reman the engine are available, even genuine bearings if thats what you want.

A brand new JLR short engine starts at £4,820. A genuine JLR reman* full (bare) engine starts at £6,522. Anyone that's fitted a JLR reman engine will be as suspicious as me as to what they have reclaimed from a previous engine. It all looks brand new to me - go figure!

As has been mentioned many times, the number of failures is very small compared to the number manufactured over the years. People come to forums generally for 2 reasons; to seek advice/help on problem or moan about a problem. You don't get many posts singing the praises of their cars.

As to why some fail, it's just down to luck IMHO.

*I say a genuine JLR reman engine, but it's actually built https://www.autocraftsg.com/ I've been up to see their factory in Grantham and it looks very good.
