Not cranking with key

Hello - this is my first post on the forum.

I have a Discovery3 05 v8 4.4 which won't crank with the key.

Will crank and start if keys are in ignition, Gear Lever is in Park and Starter Motor Relay R18 pins are jumped with a wire or paper clip.

Have tried switching relays R16 and R18 - no change

If i put my hand on the gear lever and press the brake pedal i can feel the lock/inhibitor switch operate.

No issues with Gear Selection - Park, Drive, Reverse, Neutral

12v confirmed on the ignition switch when ignition cranked.

Have tried a hard reset and disconnecting/reconnecting Transfer Case Module - no change.

Any idea what i could try next?

Thanks in advance

are you getting ignition feed to the relay ? sounds like that's the issue.

Hi

Yes, seeing 12v on the relay socket when the ignition is cranked and about 0.5v on the other pin whether it's cranked or not.

Checked all the pins and getting the following with the relay out ->

Relay 18 | Ignition On | Ignition cranked
=============================
Pin 2 | 0.5v | 0.5v
Pin 1 | 10.7v | 10.7v
Pin 3 | 11.5v | 11.5v
Pin 5 | 0v | 0v

If i put the relay back in and have the ignition ON and ground pin2 then she cranks and starts.

Am i right in thinking that pin2 should go to ground on crank startup? Is that where my problem is?

Thanks in advance

sounds logical to me.

what happens to the pin2 voltage with ignition completely off ?

With the ignition off pin 2 drops to 0.15v and pin 1 drops to 0v - the load side stays the same

The starter relay's power & ground are both module controlled . Your symptoms indicate the starter relay is not being provided a ground with the ignition in the crank position.

Check fuse 60 5A in the passenger compartment fusebox, this is the crank input from the ignition switch to the CJB. If this has blown, there will be a missing input.

Your bypass test on the starter relay has confirmed circuit integrity on the load side of the relay, as well as the starter circuit.

If you own a suitable diagnostic tool the ignition switch input status can be monitored under live data values, this will confirm the CJB is receiving the correct switch state.

In the link to the wiring diagram below i can see the 2 pins for the control side of the relay go to C0193-10 on the Transmission Control Module and to C0635-51 and C0635-15 on the Engine control module (ECM).

The car seems to run fine once it's cranked and started.

...yes apologies, forgot to add that fuse 60P for the crank feed in the CJB is fine - not blown

either

1) Put a test light on fuse 60 (by glovebox) and see if the light comes on when you crank the key.

2 or apply + power to fuse 60 and see if that causes the engine to start (with ign on)

Appreciate the suggestions guys.

Have put my name down for an IID Tool in another thread.

Also, tested the signal on Fuse 60P and looks good.
Get no test light on ignition 'off' or 'on' - and get the test light on ignition 'crank'.

Would you know (without me having to lift the BJB) which wire is which for pins 1 and 2 on the relay?
According to the wiring diagram there's a purple wire and a green wire - purple goes to the Starter Relay pin on the ECU and green goes to the P/N pin on the ECU and also to the TCM.

Just wondering which one is the one that's supposed to go to ground on crank.

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure an IID will help with this one

what a headache

I guess the ground comes from the blue/red eng. ecm. (as there is a - after the name)

I wouldn't waste time lifting the fusebox.
Just remove the battery, to gain access to the engine ecu. I think its the one with 3 plugs behind the battery? confirm it. (Although you have a petrol so could be different)
You should then be able to see the two coloured wires as both goto eng. ecu.
With relay removed, buzz out the wires.

Are guess you are happy its not the imboliser ? as the car starts

ok ... if the module has a function other than starting the engine then it's a bit odd that all is good other than cranking.

If it had been otherwise, I'd have suggested finding the point the module is earthed at ... but that might be worth trying anyway in case it's "good enough for low amps" but not so when more current is flowing through it.

Could it be the brake peddle switch?
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
