could you not remove propshafts to tow it if a trailer is too costly ?

Possibly but I don’t know how to do this and will also be back in the UK so wont be able to sit in it and steer unfortunately. James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

As car is in a garage, get propshafts removed, then tow back to England, steering will be very heavy.
If someone is going to go across to collect I can lend a heavy duty tow bar which will help with the brakes.
Checked cost of hiring a trailer and there’s not one that’s suitable for discos weight wise but you could possibly get it transported.Discovery 3 HSE 07

If anyone can suggest anybody / company that does repatriation I would be very grateful. Our insurance covers us to 800 quid so I will be paying the rest ! Big thanks to DSL also ! If I hadn’t read his post I wouldn’t have got any insurance at all !!!
Glad my experiences/paranoia helped and sorry to hear the predicament. My sage advice, for what it’s worth, would be if you can get it home for the amount you have insured or a bit more if needed, then get it home (with all your stuff) and you can go from there. I shied away from doing the same as it was going to cost loads of additional money to do that, or go over in my D4 and tow it back. That would have been dangerously crazy as I’ve never towed anything ever.
Re company, I was at the mercy of the Norwegian auto club so costs were stupid (I think they based it on ~£1,000 a day for a truck & driver for 9 days), it should be a lot cheaper from France (I missed where in France). Which insurers are you with? Speaking to them re costs would be your first step then getting on Google to see what other commercial options you have if that’s the way you’re going to go.

PS Just clocked 20 mins S of Calais, that would really help as it’s the number of miles that is the killer. The other option, which I’ve heard some peeps have done but I couldn’t possibly condone as it’s a bit naughty, would be get it to Russell’s, take out AA/RAC/GF cover incl recovery and phone them up saying “Houston, we have a problem .........”.

Sorry if I'm missing something.. but haven't the belts just been replaced??
What was replaced?
Who did the job?
New belts shouldn't snap!
Get in touch with the company and your insurance company and get them to get it back and fix it??Disco4 MY16 SDV6 Landmark Black

Ok. So found a place that can pick it up on the 13th or 14th August for £1k plus vat. They have a lorry in France and have space. Think that is a good price and if I can get the insurance Company to cover the cost to £800 then that will help a lot. We will then have to work our how we will get home !!James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

Agreed !! That car is better looked after than me. As per DM until the engine is stripped I can’t tell what has happened. So saving judgement just now I will get it brought back to Scotland and try and make it my mechanics problem. Maybe fit a re con via DM if he is able to do so and have it as a second car. Just for towing the horses and what not. If not viable then will brake it up for parts. Will be a shame as it is a great car. Just doesn’t have a working engine !!James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

Before you go with that company, have you tried something like Shiply?
I haven't used it for a car before, but have used it for other things, most recently collecting a 20ft field shelter, it cost me less than the cost of hiring a trailer..
Its certainly worth a go, different companies bid for your work, so you'll receive various quotes then you just choose the best, or don't..
worth a go, you might find someone willing to do it for less than a grand.. Just a thoughtDisco4 MY16 SDV6 Landmark Black

I had quotes from Shiply last week, to see what it would cost to move a Disco 3 from the Portsmouth area to Central Scotland - lowest before throwing in the towel was just over £500 and that was with no rush

Latest update is that our insurer are bringing it back for us. I have to pay storage at 25euro a day for a week but in the grand scheme of things it is what it is !James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

If that’s back to home, then I’d say reasonable result. However I don’t envy your predicament with replacing the engine or stripping/scrapping.

I hired a trailer for £45 for 1 day, so bit of a trip but a week hire would only be around £150 ish
Of course you need to add tunnel costs and you'll need a tow vehicle
How about asking on here if somebody with a large car trailer who could lend it or hire?Iggy/Ieuan
