Not a good start to our trip in France, sorry long post

So after spending a small fortune on a service, timing belt, new oil pump, water pump, brakes all round and two new front tyres the engine let go twenty minutes from Calais. 4 in the morning with a car loaded to the rafters including roof box, fishing rods on the roof and a flat bed bike rack with 4 bikes on it. Plus a family of 4.

Car had been fine for the last few months since the belts were done and didn’t miss a beat on the Scotland to Dover leg, just didn’t like Calais obviously. We got lifted off the A16 and taken back to a garage who looked at it and said very quickly it is dead. They turned it over and looked down the oil cap and wasn’t turning over. Just a nasty sound and not a lot else. They said the belt had either snapped or come off and kept getting a cam shaft sensor fault.

Symptoms when it happened were oil light came on, engine system fault, lots of lights, no power and then no steering.

So the predicament is this, we had some basic breakdown insurance that covered the cost to get us off the motorway and to the garage. We also have a hire car for the next 21 days while we are in France and need to drop it back off in Calais. However it is a Renault espace so we have had to leave all the bikes, fishing gear and a load of other things in the disco. Million dollar question is what to do next. We live in the Scottish Borders and I would quite like to break it up for spares (as most of it is bloody new with Advanced parts !! ) but guessing the repatriation costs would be a lot. We have cover to about 700 quid I believe to get it home. Or we drive to Calais and catch the train home, rent a panel ban and drive back to Calais to get all our stuff. Then sell the Disco as is or just scrap it. Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated. It is a HSE with a massive over pampered service history and 132k.

Is fixing it out the question?

Is it worth having the front cover off to check the belts etc, to see if there is liability from the garage who recently done the belts?

They didn’t look at it in any detail. Basically said it is fubard. Regarding come back on the local garage it wouldnt even be worth it but appreciate the suggestions He used my parts (from advanced) so will say it was a part that failed and not him. He is also a mate via the Rugby club so would get political. Appreciate the thoughts though, when it did fail it did it silently, no loud bangs, no Knocking just oil light and then no Power.

I'd get it towed to a reputable shop for a solid verdict. Then make the decision.

Good point. But if you look down the oil filler and with the engine cranking should the engine start moving at this point ? This is how the claimed the belt had gone

Yes if you look into the oil filler spout, with the engine being cranked, you should see that camshaft turning. If it is not, then the drive to the camshaft has failed, either belt or tensioner failure. Rolling Eyes

Will your breakdown cover not cover you to get it repatriated to the UK and have it delivered to a decent independent?

If you can see camshaft, it should be turning. If not, belt snap is likely. If you do hire a van to go for your stuff, take DM with you ?

I am on Romney Marsh which is 35 minutes from tunnel and 50 minutes from ferry. If you can get it back to UK, you could drop it off at mine while you get a way of recovering it back to Scotland if that helps.

There is also a vey good indeendant LR specialist (both ex LR Techs who both run LR/RR) who could probably do an engine swap if you want to go that way

Thanks and appreciate the offers. It is an auto so needs to go on a trailer. Russel I may well take you up on that so thanks. If it is mega money getting it back to scotland then at least having it in the UK would be easier. I can then rent a van to get all the stuff back home. Then either sell it for parts or look to get it fixed. I think we will come back by the Eurostar to London and then get the train back to Scotland. At least we will then be home ! Really appreciate the offers !

If anyone can suggest anybody / company that does repatriation I would be very grateful. Our insurance covers us to 800 quid so I will be paying the rest ! Big thanks to DSL also ! If I hadn’t read his post I wouldn’t have got any insurance at all !!!
