Odd bodyroll issue

My D3 seems to have a peculiar issue with excessive body lean on some corners. I noticed some time ago that going around certain roundabouts or sharp turns into junctions, even at pretty low speeds, the body lean seems excessive. It's worse when steering to the right, to the extent the traction control kicks in as the body pitches over to the left (front left corner dives and rear right comes up is the sensation). It does it, but less-so, going the other way, traction doesn't kick in. Moving across tram tracks embedded in the roads here in Sheffield really seems to unsettle it too, perhaps moreso the back end, but it's the only D3 I've driven so maybe that's just how 2.7 tonnes and air suspension behaves on them.

I mentioned all this to my indy when it went in for a service and asked if they would check over the suspension (the car was new to me at at the time). They said they didn't find anything obvious but it felt a bit twitchy to them (to me it felt serene but I'd come from a D2) and probably needed a 4 wheel alignment. This was done and it felt a bit tidier overall but the roll issue persists. I think if they didn't hit any roundabouts on their test drive they wouldn't have encountered the issue as oddly on a twisty A road at a fair lick it seems to handle pretty well.

The ride is also lovely on all but very broken surfaces where it gets slightly lumpy. But it feels like it would badly fail an elk test, so although not a huge issue overall I'm concerned something isn't right and I don't wanna find out during an emergency manoeuvre. I wondered about dampers (mileage is 180k and no idea if they've been changed) but then the ride is good not crashy. It's going in next week for new A/C condenser so does anyone have any ideas of what I should point the garage in the direction of..? Cheers, AJ.

Sounds possibly like weak suspension bushes, worn ARB bushes, a weak rear shock absorber, or a combination of more than one of these. You need someone who knows these vehicles to check thoroughly the rear upper and lower arms as well as the toe links knuckles and ARB bushes.

If the arm bushes look perished or there are badly rusted eyes you may consider replacing the above.

180k on original shocks is asking a bit much.

Mine is 140k and over the last 10k or so has gotten sloppier in the handling dept.

Thanks chaps. The garage is a land rover specialist and has a very good rep and my experience with them has always been excellent so I'm not sure why it wasn't picked up, I've often seen D3s on the ramps there. At least now I have some items to specifically ask them to check, ta. I'm only assuming it's on original shocks as no record of a change so I think a general suspension refresh might be the next move after a gearbox flush.

Mine is like this now after I fitted different tyres to the front than the rear as they weren't available.

I think this is possibly a tyre/bush problem, my front shocks were repalced 6 months ago.

Check the bolt at the end (eye) of the track rod:

Mine have had the same issue due to bent over bolt!

So just to follow up on this... Indy checked out all relevant parts. He agreed it felt a bit wayward but said there was no obviously defective part but said the rear bushes on the lower front arms were a bit worn so it must be that plus just a case of the suspension components in general being a bit tired and all adding up.

The MOT history does have advisories on front upper and lower arm bushes being "worn but not resulting in excessive movement". Never any clonking on speed bumps or braking though. Nonetheless I'm just going to give the suspension a general refresh.

First job will be new control arms. Given the MOT mentions front upper as well as lower I said I'd get both but mechanic said only bother with lower, he's yet to have to change any uppers. Is changing the uppers poor value for money and it was probably just an over zealous MOT tester? I'll also get rear uppers done for belt and braces prior to a 4 wheel alignment. Any additional minor bits that would be worthwhile adding in before the alignment is done?

Perhaps get the anti roll bar bushes changed? They used to be a common problem with knocking on earlier D3's, and they were modified quite early in the life og the D3.

Yours might still be worn?

My understanding is that body 'lean' is controlled by the ARB and its linkage. So excessive lean would be the ARB bushes (front and rear) and their linkage arms. Lower control arms with worn bushes will give some effect to lean but is more to do with 'clonks' (technical term) when going over rough stuff or braking.
