Speaking from my own experience I recently bought some side steps to fit to my D4. I bought a set costing about £160 from a local Landrover independent garage.
First impression was that they looked exactly like the originals I'd had on my D3. The n/s went on easily, but the o/s just wouldn't fit. No matter what we tried, the trim on the bottom of the drivers door rubbed on the top of the step. We had no choice other to take them both off.
We decided to lay out the extra money on a set of genuine and got a good deal from the chaps at
Duckworths. When they arrived, we had a good look at both sets to compare. The quality of the genuine was much better than the cheaper set when able to compare the undersides of each. The rivets holding the silver trim were of better quality and generally looked more substantial. (Only to be expected I suppose!).
The set I had on my D3 were fitted from new by Landrover and served me well for 11 years and the silver trim remained intact for all those years. Although I did have to replace the n/s in the early days with a second hand genuine step from another forum member due to a mishap on an off-roading day! As you slide down the banister of life

Over the years I've bough 3 sets off genuine and 2 copies. The genuine fit better, and last better. The side trim on the copies pitted, discoloured and on one set kept coming loose. That said do your research on the copies as I believe the LR ones may well be made by Britpart or bearmach which could be a good middle ground.
In short the eBay ones are "ok" for the money but can have issues. LR ones are better but at 5 times the cost they should be! MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten
MY12 HSE - Gone
MY16 HSE Luxury - Sold
MY20 D5 HSE - Sold

Had Britpart put on by the main dealer. They were worse than useless. Like above discoloured and didn't last.

I have had my genuine steps on for 11 years and still look like new. Had to treat underneath with rust protection but that's to be expected as I don't clean under there. 2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

I've got a set of genuine steps you can have for cheap. Came off of my MY14 after first 12 months, and in vgc.
Will need collecting from Basingstoke / Winchester area though.
PM if interested.

Have you used a Discovery with the sidesteps. I am over six foot and find them annoying but my shorter wife likes them. I don't tend to use them, just step over them. 2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.
