AT oil contamination

So less than a week after solving the steering angle sensor we have the judder back with vengeance, it was in the back ground and I could drive around it.

To recap, the TC was replaced about 18 months and 9000m ago and I have what feels like the same symptoms back. At the same time would the gearbox oil have been changed?

I had a double flush about a month before the juddering started.

What is my best approach?

I have some Dr tranny that I could put in but I would like to understand what the issue is before doing that.

I will have to resolve this myself, there are no LR indi around here and forget main stealer prices.

My thoughts are to look at gearbox oil contamination first and to see if I can find a test kit I can use.

Is that the place to start and anyone got a link to a kit?

All help is most welcome. Thank you in advance.

Hi Pete K
Yes two years.
However, when I spoke to them they said they have never had one go wrong. They also asked me to bring the car in for them to check. Which is all reasonable on their behalf but it would cost me at least three days worth of work to go back to the Uk. Then they will only look at it and probably check for contamination which would mean another trip to fix it if under warranty.

I have three options

I have to learn how to fix it myself .
Burn it
Buy a Nissan Patrol.

Going for the first for the moment. Thumbs Up

So the double flush caused it ?

Was the wrong oil used?

I don't know what oil was used. It was done by a good indi Broadfields in Essex. I flew in from France picked up the car and took it the 10 miles to Broadfields for a flush and a couple of other bits.

It was about a month (I think) after that, the problem started. I had done about 3000 miles towing a fully 3.5t loaded trailer by then. They diagnosed it as a faulty TC, the dealer agreed to pay for that and the compressor, so I drove back from France for them to fix it.

Hi D&G
Have you drained the oil and checked it ? I have heard of an issue where there is a crack between the gearbox heat exchanger and rad where coolant can get into the auto fluid.

Haven't done anything yet. Just getting my head around it and some guidance before I attempt it.

Just double checked and the TC started playing up within a week of picking up. However, I don't know that it wasn't already on the way out before the flush. The towing the digger could have been the final straw.

I was thinking of a testing kit like this, only less expensive. I hope.

Anyone used one?

contamination is the first excuse these gearbox people use.

Yes it did happen in the old days. 1970's

If you have flushed it with red gearbox oil, then they will reject it under warranty.

Hi Pete

Broadfields did the flush and then the TC change. I would have thought that means two oil changes.

As it is not a simple trip for me to take it back to them and if I did I would expect them to check to see if coolant had leaked in via the radiator. It would be better if I could do the test myself. If it proves positive then I will change radiator or by pass with a cooler and then deal with the ATF.

If it proves negative then I can discuss with them and take it from there.

If I am barking up the wrong tree with this, then I am happy to be corrected Thumbs Up

Have ordered the ebay one.

Looked at the Merc issue but there doesn't seem to be many options with the test kits.

It was always going to be an issue having a LR in France. Rolling Eyes

Update.
I now have a delivery date of 7th of March. So a while to wait.

I have cross ref this post for anyone who lands here on a search.

I would bet that the seals on the gearbox were not changed when they did the TC. If I understand correctly, if I have no coolant contamination then it is likely that these seals will need changing. Or is it another new TC and seals?
