Oil discolouration?

I was having a squint at the oil level today and its as black as the proverbial bag of soot, I haven't run a diesel for years is it correct that there is so much gunk in the sump that the new oil is blackened almost straight away Question The oil doesnt seem too thin yet is there a litmus test for oil age?
Apart from a wee drop between thumb and finger Thumbs Up

The oil change on your TDV6 is 15k, if it as been changed since you have nothing to worry about. Just make sure it is the correct grade! I'm no expert on this but I'm sure you will get some other advice here.

On a diesel after an oil change, the oil will appear black after a couple of miles, as all of the old oil does not drain out. When changing oil, the engine should be warmed up prior to draining the oil.
