Oil Opinions Please

Could you just take a minute to give me your opinion on Engine Oils please?

We sell a fair bit of Mobil & Castrol premium oils to the forums but our local trade tend to buy oils by price, we have even sold (just to the trade) 5w30 fully synthetic for less than a tenner for a 5litre.

I am of the opinion that the oil should be fit for the job and brand name is something you pay for and so we have appointed a UK blender (in fact the biggest independent UK blender) to do an own brand for us to a high specification (Similar to Mobil specs - not allowed to say same specs!)

So the questions are do you buy premium? Do you buy by price? Do you just pick up whatever when you see some? Would you like good specification oils from us without the brand name?

Opinions please, it's important to get the offer right for the majority.

It's all about price for me, as long as the spec is correct.
As I change the oil and filter every 6k miles.
I always use OEM filters.

I buy by spec not flashy names or fancy ad campaigns, major majority are all recycled oil anyway and things have moved on a lot in the last 10 years.

Halfords are doing full sny for £10 5-30w I think, compared to our fuel in this country, oil is not to expensive. I remember a few years ago trying to buy oil in Portugal and it was more than twice the price than the UK for the same oil.

Castrol magnatech for me.

Good trade off between brand and quality.

I do mine every 6k with an OEM filter from TLO.

I'm on 112k a d never seen a puff of smoke.

Spec and price, if you considering spec what's the difference in your opinion between castrol magnetec and edge 5w30, for some reason I think edge is better but LR use to recommend magnitec? I also change every 6k and prepared to pay more for higher spec oil because I do the work myself!

Magnatec was the best Castrol option when the handbook was printed, Edge is the evolution of the product. Either are fine.

For me as we discussed Steve, i found Fuch's Titan Race to be very good but a tad expensive Big Cry found it quick to warm up and engine running sounded smoother, only used for 1 interval and since gone back on magnatec!

Would definitely go back on Fuchs if it were a better price, saying that it has come down in price since i bought it a year ago!

Whats a brand ?

to me its a statement of that product comes from a known & trusted source
Castrol
Mobil
Shell
Total
Penn

in previous years I used Duckham's exclusively (20/50 & Q)
I steer well clear of
Comma...the choice of many garages & dealers...they buy it cheap & sell it dear....then trouser the difference
Halfrauds.....they do the same as above
Car Lube
Fuch's....had major disasters using this at work that costa small fortune to rectify
Rock.....bargain basement stuff....very cheap...very nasty
especially products from local (maybe even back street) "blenders"

I have to say whats the point in economising on this essential & critical component....?
whatever you save you will pay dearly for at some stage...especially if you keep you car / D3.

I wouldn't even use "cheap" oils to flush any engine of any car that was .....
 BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

I spend a few quid more and put Type V ester-based oil in. Fuchs is the old Silkolene Pro-S that many petrol heads swear by. Opie sell more of it than anything else.

I researched this a few years ago. I agree with you about branding. You do pay for the name with a lot of brands such as Mo*** *. I had a fantastically helpful and detailed email back from one of the chemists at Silkolene (now owned by Fuchs). I decided that if they could be bothered to do that, they were likely to have put a lot of care into their product.

My logic is that an extra 20 quid once a year is cheaper than a new turbo, big end bearings (if you could get them) Rolling Eyes

This topic is always guaranteed to create loads of debate Razz

I buy Castrol Magnatec and OEM filter, replace oil and filter every £6k miles.
Most important thing you do to you car IMHO
I would need to be convinced that any own brand oil would be of the same quality.

Good comments, keep it coming!

We are doing the own branding so we can sell the right oil per application to the trade, there will be around 6 types of 5w30 alone, fed up of seeing poor specification oil being used because of price, this isn't a big profit opportunity exercise as we will still be selling at tight margins, it's about educating our customers in the need for using the right product.

Majority comments so far confirm that as owners you want quality over price, but obviously fair pricing

As to convincing you what to buy, not my aim, I want to supply what you want so if it means sourcing more brands, that's just what we will do.

As I say, keep the comments coming.

One thing I forgot to ask - Do you buy to the nearest Litre for the job? or 2 cans?

Steve

I note you currently only have Castrol Edge 5W30 fully synthetic on your website at £40 for 4 litres.

I personally wouldn't go for your proposed "own brand". I normally use Castrol Magnatec - & without a pressing reason am unlikely to change.

At what price would you offer Castrol Magnatec ?

Regards
