Your 2005 pump is the early one and should be fine to leave alone.Defender 110 2.4 TDCi Utility Station Wagon.

James, the original 2005 pumps are less prone to failure than the changed design around 2007. Some failures have however been reported. Later pumps are reinforced to prevent failure of the casting at the mounting point for the camshaft timing belt tensioner. Such a failure results in damage to the engine which is more often than not terminal.
There is a great deal of information on this site showing how to identify the improved design of pump, the failure mode and the best sources of a replacement .
Oil pumps wear in service and to me it seems prudent to replace them when changing the belts, (depending on pump type and mileage). I did my own at 98k.
My, perhaps abrasive, post was to suggest that fitting a reliable pump with adequate flow rate and pressure was a greater priority than a delayed alternative.

Hi John,
I totally appreciate your comments and the advice of yourself and anyone else who makes the effort to contribute to this post.
I've got a 2005 with only 40K on the clock (it was a country estate car for 16 years) but whist the mileage may be low there will be many age related parts which will have worn/fatigued and I'm trying to work out where to spend my money/time first to get the greatest benefit...such as its never had the cam/aux/fuel pump belts done, all 6 of my glow plugs are foobar and the transmission still has the original plastic pan!
Whilst there is a wealth of information on here...and I've trawled through most of it but...a lot of advice might be over a decade old and some things might have moved on...my idea was to get a 2023 update as to what we should be fitting now and where to source it.
Cheers

Lets take a moment to reflect on the fact that this has been redesigned not once but twice and never an admission of fault or a recall!
I'm not sure I have it in me to change the oil pump again! I'm certain I have the reinforced casing but likely not not the wider rotor.

That is the main thing. Owners of cars around 2007 need to change oil pumps

For those folks interested, I have just purchased a new FoMoCo genuine LR pump (from JGS4x4) and it has the suffix -AE on the casting. I have measured the impeller depth and can confirm it is 15mm. I did speak to Paul at Advanced Factors and he also confirmed that the pumps they stock are also 15mm impeller.
Zeroed on top of impeller:
Measured to base of impeller housing:
Manfactured in Jan 2020:
Thanks

That is quite common in the automotive world tbhā¦
On later models on the same basic design, they do developmentā¦ so later models can have āupgradedā features / sizes / or whateverā¦. and since those parts do fit on older models, such a part becomes the replacement part for the earlyer modelsā¦. Keeps stocking them simple and stocks lowā¦
My company does BMW parts, it is really very common..in our worldā¦
BMW does even give those parts a different partnumber, but with a internal (administration) reference, so if you order the āoldā partnumber, you get a newer partnumberā¦. I have seen 4 different replacement numbers for one itemā¦ sometimes there is a difference, sometimes notā¦ but those older numbers were never designated as āwrongā/faulty or whateverā¦ even if the newer does perform different/beter..Best regards
Harold

I just purchased a original FoMoCo pump from Citroen (part nr 1001 G2). It's manufactured in South Korea (like LR) and suffix AE. Rotor 15mm. Purchased for ā¬144(ex VAT)
