ongoing air suspension fault local - compressor software? |
|
Hi all,
96 D3 SE with 198k on the clock.
Ive had ongoing air suspension faults for the last couple years with various fix's. The car currently is not going up fully on the front. Ive replaced a faulty height sensor but to no avail.
last year it had a new reservoir, new compressor, rear height sensor and some wiring sorted between myself and the local garage.
Anyhow the local independent 'specialist' is saying the garage who replaced the compressor must have put in an AMK compressor but its firmware is still for the Hitachi, and that seems to be part of the issues. They say they can update the firmware to suit at the cost of £290 +vat which seems very expensive.
Does this seem right or are they having me on? A bit of searching would suggest that its not always 'necessary' to do the update?
regards
Matt

is it necessary. I guess it's done the damage to the compressor now though?
Anyway, I think you may be able to buy a gap iid for £500, (check it will update the software).
It's an amazing tool, it will hold its value and still be worth £450 ! (* figures for example purposes only)

Someone with more brain cells will be along shortly to correct me.
There is a need to upgrade the software when moving from an Hitachi to AMK compressor, however it’s to allow the compressor temperature to continue to be monitored, the AMK uses a different sensor setup so no update means the car can’t stop it over heating and dying.
There’s no other reason for he software patch as far as I’m aware and I can’t see it causing the issues you’re having.
you say the front isnt going up fully? Is that in normal mode or extended height?what are the heights you’re seeing? Have you tried re-calibrating the suspension? (Setting the car heights via gap I’d or similar 2008 HSE Stornoway Grey
My Wife thinks the D3 is a hobby, The D3 thinks the wife is 💕

Hello, Thank you for your comments.
update:
SO £800 quid later, after the garage updated the software, replace the front driver side height sensor with a LR one as apparently the one I had was a 'cheap copy and no good', welded up the metal bracket as it was flimsy and performed a recalibration. It initially appeared to fix the issue (no more full time yellow warning light).
The car drove home fine, however the next day it was right down on the end stops and periodically still throws faults. - it seems worse in the wet - or cold, but whatever the weather sometimes its fine, sometimes its not.
Recently Im getting a 'bing' red warning light, then a little later 'bing bong' and the warning about not going more than 30 mph and the car slowly dropping down. HOWEVER, if I haven't stopped and restarted the car in time, then sometimes the light will then go off by itself and the car will raise up slightly. (until it does or doesn't fault again).
If I stop the car, if I lock it, it nearly always drops down a bit on the front.
If I select off-road mode, it normally goes up fine. both front and back. Normally to get the right ride height in normal mode, I find raising up first in off-road mode and driving off and letting the car force into normal mode works best.
Ill try nd borrow my mates magicom soon and see what faults its logged now.
Its almost like its still out of calibration - or something is telling it that the front is higher than it is/preventing it from going higher. Im thinking electrical issue somewhere - but weher is the question. That or perhaps a valve or something no working right in the compressor or middle valve block?
Thanks
Matt

Hi Have a look at LR time on the Y-tube he goes into suspension faults and how they appear to fix them selves then re-appear.
His fault was the front air block and sticking valves, which after reading your posts is the only thing you haven't touched.
He just bought a cheep Chinese one problem fixed.
hope this helps

Hi Flapper,
I have looked at some of his vids, but its a good idea to go through them again. I have actually replaced the front valve block about 3 weeks ago - was the first thing I did.
I must add, it had a new compressor and some wiring fixed last year. I also put in a refurbished reservoir as my old one was leaking.
I don't think I have a leak anywhere are I found when I remove the fuse for the air suspension - it stays where it is overnight.
Thanks
Matt

Something similar happened on mine after changing the height sensor and front valve block ( done by a local indie),

when I checked everything I found one of the plugs going into a height sensor had been damaged and never clicked into place, so when the D3 was driven I was getting red lights, 30 mph not to be exceeded and suspension dropping, when I stopped I could raise to normal height and drive off only to have the fault repeating until I fixed the plug and made it stay in the socket. D3 4.4 V8 2005 sadly now gone
Freelander 2 i6 HSE now gone was a very good 4x4
