Perhaps not applicable to your part of the world, but here in Oz, 19" tyres outside of one or two capital cities are relegated to mythical status. So if you need an extra in a hurry, forget it. For remote touring, we found the most common tyre-size that would fit the D3 was 245/70R17 or 265/70R17, both of which provide quite a few tyre choices in both MT and AT. Plus you have the advantage of larger sidewalls and can get Light Truck construction in these sizes.

I agree, 19" MTRs are a mistake. The sidewalls are very hard and not very tall and transmit shock through to the rims, which eventually crack on rough roads. As a 16" tyre they are fantastic, but not in 19". Try to get 17", I run mine on the new Goodyear ATRs, which are great for everything except thorns which go through the sidewalls very easily -everything is a compromise!! There are lts of choices in this size. Make sure you carry a tubeless repair kit, very easy to use and 9 times out of 10 you can repair a puncture without even taking the wheel off.

As regards a second tank, I fitted the Kaymar rear bar and long ranger tank, both from Oz and both really expensive. I can't decide if this is worth doing, especially as you are on a budget. I am amazed that no one in the UK is building these things, but I suppose it goes back to the fact that people in the UK don't need these things and people in OZ do. I guess there are not enough people like you driving across Africa!

I am not convinced by extensive underbody protection, personally I think most of it is a waste of money. Most overland trips are 99% on roads anyway, and you certainly won't need a locking rear diff, which I doubt you will find on lower spec D3s...

Also don't expect your D3 to be any more reliable than your D1... The most invaluable tool you can ever take overland is your credit card, but I guess you know that already...!

By the way, I drove a 1972 lightweight SIII through Tunisia, Algeria and Morrocco in 1992 and it didn't miss a beat... I don't want to put a downer on your trip but don't expect your friendly local Morroccan mechanics to be able to fix a D3... Whistle

mine look as I got them after 1K+ of harsh surface in Romania and last 5000 miles, not even scratch and I can not imagine better rubber so versatile for the trip although you are right about the side wall height does not help to protect the alloy from being scratched or chipped

yes, common problem here. i can post photos, although can't prove that it is as a result of the harder sidewalls in the 19" tyres. also hard to get replacements on route, as has been said before... 17" best bet in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong, I think the Goodyear MTR is an excellent tyre, and have used them for competition rallying extensively, I just don't think they are the best choice for this application in 19". In 16" I think they are unbeatable, especially the latest design with the Kevlar sidewalls.

OK, I have obviously pressed a button here... I will endeavour to get more info on the vehicles that have suffered this problem with these tyres. As an aside, I don't believe that Goodyear make these Tyres in 19" anymore, although I could be wrong...

The reason I say this is a friend of mine bought a D3 and came to me for a tyre recommendation, and I recommended these Tyres to him, and he has had two rims crack, naturally he came back to me to tell me. He also says that he is not the only one. The thinking about the cause is mine, and is an opinion, not a fact, I admit. It could be a dodgy batch of rims, I suppose...

It looks as if you're right about the mt/r. Goodyear UK don't show it at all on their website if you use the tyre selctor. If you search directly it shows the older version and you can't select a size. So it looks like they no longer offer them in the UK other than what dealers have in stock Crying or Very sad

The BFG website states : "We have no product suitable for your vehicle" so I shall have to look elsewhere. It's bad enough being stranded in the middle of nowhere unable to get a replacement, I don't want it to happen when I'm at home Rolling Eyes

I can understand the benefits of having a deeper sidewall, especially having driven the sands in Tunisa, I just really liked MT/Rs and (if I'm honest) the look of 19" rims.

I'm quite happy to do the research but, before i do, has anyone collated a complet list of off-road suitable tyres for 17", 18" and 19" disco 3 rims? If not I can see a few hours of googling ahead Smile
