Overlanding tyres??
Hi all,
I use my truck ‘off road’ quite a bit but mainly on rough stone or unmade tracks. I rarely go onto anything approaching mud terrain…
I don’t therefore need (or want) full off road tyres capable of dealing with lots of wet and boggy ground.
So my question is, what is considered to be a good 19 inch overlanding tyre? I currently run standard Goodyear Duratrac which are nice and quiet on road and reasonably robust but which are prone to cuts on rough stone tracks. I drive 90% on road and 10% off (annual mileage 30k pa).
Any suggestions or recommendations?

I am afraid that on rocks the rim size you use is the problem too, regarding the cuts you talked about..
Try 18” rims and a high wall tyre, and you will be better of…. ImhoBest regards

ATRs, as seen here back in the day, for exactly that use.

Works well on road (I have them on my RRS and they can be driven quite sportingly if one wishes), they seem to be robust with some sidewall protection in the form of large bumps around the shoulder region. Also have the benefit of being winter rated (3PMSF symbol on the sidewall) should that be a requirement.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

The General Grabber AT3 is also worth considering.
Been running them on my D4 for over two years now, great for both on and off road.
My off road driving now mainly consists of forest tracks and these can have big chunks of loose hardcore to facilitate the heavily loaded logging lorries.
All been great ……. so far. I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

So on my 5th LandRover, 3 have been Disco 3 and then 2x Disco 4 At the moment i am in the D4 V8, and never happier. About 2 years ago I posted the same about tires as I live in South Africa. So plenty of off roading, lots of visits to Mozambique so always on the beach and driving in Sand. More recently I have been in Lesotho with ice and snow, ant the Pirelli ATR's have never failed there either....although they don't really like ice too much, the terrain response fixed that. I tried the Copper ATT's, and they were ok, but very uncomfortable on tar. If I could say, the Pirelli ATR, (my 5th Set) is still the winner for the Disco 3 / 4Previously Freelander II

I had the ATR many years ago on my RRS and was impressed by them. Sadly, in the UK at least, they don't seem to be available in 19 inch anymore.
The Grabber AT3 is also a good tyre. Had those before the Pirelli AT+. Did a couple of days off road in Wales on worn AT3 and they did gain some side wall cuts. One went down to the chords. As they were nearing replacement that wasn't too painful as the outlay was planned for already.
I'm increasingly of the opinion that Disco / RRS sized AT tyres are all pretty similar and the choice is really down to availability, price, and personal aesthetic preference. Sure, one tyre will be a bit better in mud, another better on tarmac, another better in snow but overall they're much of a muchness.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Pirelli ATR's still showing as available in 255-60-18, which is the size I ran on my D4 (Compomotive 18" rims). Best all round tyre for my use.

The expression over landing means many different things to different people.
So if you are going to remote places it will be a good idea to check availability of your preferred tyre size in more remote places.
Next check the age of the tyres before going on a trip. The older the tyre the more likely that the rubber has started to degrade which basically means rubber is more brittle and more likely to suffer from punctures. The age of the tyre can be found from date of manufacture in the DOT code.
Tyre manufacturers tend to recommend changing tyres at about 7 years irrespective of tyre wear. Personally if going on a long trip I will ensure my tyre age is less than 5 years if not 3 years depending where going..
