P2290: 2SO, LPFP or HPFP

Next problem on my D3 is a P2290 fault I read after "Transmission fault, HDC not available, Special programs off, Suspension lowered" and a christmas tree on the dash.....
All fine after a restart.

I have the P2290 (Injector control pressure too low) together with some 'Lost communication' errors. I think the HPFP is mechanically connected to the engine speed so will not shut down on a communication problem, I suppose the lost communication is caused by different components starting to shut down after the P2290 and not the other way around.

It happens every 2 or 3 weeks, so not easy to reproduce and happens mostly on low rpm, not when the engine is working hard.

First thing what came to my mind is that it will be the HPFP, but I read here that also the LPFP can cause a P2290 and I've had an empty fuel tank, so maybe the LPFP has had a bad time?

On a second thought: I don't have problems cranking or accelerating, so the HPFP can't be that bad, or am I wrong?

I never used 2SO because I have an euro 4 with DPF and didn't find reactions of 2SO users with DPF, I'm afraid the DPF would clog up. If 2SO would be safe I'd like to try this option first.

Any comments please ...

search for P2290 gives quite a few results here, you may want to check these first. General concensus seems to be HPFP, but ou never know. It could be as simple as brakebulbs or brake switch.

I did, my problem is not recent. Brake switch and bulbs changed few months ago.

Perfectly fine as long as it's JASO FC spec. Thumbs Up

Thanks Lost for Words for the specification, so something like this:
http://www.auto-eshop.be/q8-2t-daily-super-1l.html
It is semi-synthetic, but it seems that's what the 'C' is for in JASO FC.

2sO will not fix whatever issue you have. You need to return the diagnostics.

Damned, I was hoping the HPFP needed some oil.

What do you mean with this? Is there something else I can check / measure / read out with IIDTool ?

start with a new fuel filter as you may have had some carp fuel and is partially clogged.

Had this on my old 2009 D3 - its the high fuel pressure sensor, but you cant get that on its own, its part of the HPF pump. Mine kept throwing the error intermittantly over a few weeks, then one day did it about 6 or 7 times on one journey. Time to sort it.

There are two versions of the pump on the D3 (euro 3 or euro 4) so make sure you get the right one. It sits in the V at the back of the engine, so very tight, but can be changed from the top if you have small hands. Change the rear belt at the same time.

From LR, about 650 GBP if I recall for my Euro 4 one, a bit less for Euro 3, but here in the UK, Carwoods do a recon unit, exchange for £325 (or they did when I needed mine)

As the HPFP is driven directly the pressure is proportional to RPM. The best way to check is to graph the output against RPM and throttle pedal and look for a consistent and smooth response.

There was a recall of the HPFP in 07-08 models.

I thought there was a pressure regulator that adjusts the measure pressure (the one we see via live values) dependant on throttle position and revs, though once above about 2000rpm, there should be enough pressure available to server the injectors whatever you do - upto 2000rpm, the pressure is building up still. Which is why my ESF's often occurred at around 2000rpm because the pressure couldn't be generated so had a new HPFP fitted.
