Paint Depth - Safe Compounding

Hi All

After a few off road sessions 🤪👍🤪 last year I’ve got quite a lot of scratches from bushes and such. So it’s now come time for it’s annual intensive external clean down and polish.

With this in mind I wondered if anyone with a paint gauge has any readings for their Discovery 4, as mine seem a little low in areas (80um), although door jars which I’m told are a good min level are down to 50um.

I know some of the scratches are quite bad but just want to get as much info before I give it a good compound (dual action) and polish.

Any suggestions always welcome.

Thanks

It takes more than a dft gauge. It's how thick the clear coat is that matters which is very difficult to judge. These digital gauges measure the total thickness i.e. primer, basecoat & lacquer which can be misleading.
I might be teaching you to suck eggs but thought it's worth a mention

😁 no worries and yep I understand the layers of the paint.... certainly not an exact science 😉

At least it gives you some idea of difference and where to be careful.

Any experience of polishes to use on a badly swirled and scratched D4 paintwork?
Thinking of trying CG V36 with Orange cutting pad after a good clean, Clay and then follow up with some sealant and wax.

Menzerna 302 on a medium pad. Follow with PO85RE on a soft pad. Safe down to 40 microns. Both are diminishing polishes and need to be worked properly to avoid holograms.
