Paint problem

What’s going on here?

When washed and in a certain light, the rear nearside panel looks different from the adjoining panels.

Thing is, it doesn’t happen all the time, just very occasionally, the rest of the time it looks normal.

Any marks or swirls likewise. It’s like invisible ink. Wink

It’s a new car - March 2018, that had a tow ball put on.

The LR main dealer marked the rear plastics in the process, so replaced the rear bumper. It involved their paint shop spraying the bit that’s effected.

I’ve drawn their attention to it, but they are at a loss to explain it other than trick of the light which is backed up by the fact it also looks like I’ve scrapped or marked it - swirls and scuffs, which hasn’t happened. The thing is it’s only visible very occasionally.

Before I take it further, I need to know exactly what’s going on.

do you have sodium street lights up your neck of the woods ? I remember many years ago a mate with a Capri that looked ok (paint-wise at least Whistle ) until seen under the street lamps of the day, when it looked like a patchwork quilt !


there's probably someone on here wiser than me that can tell you a better (repeatable) way of highlighting the patch.

I'm CTO of a Armouring & Tactical Vehicles Company and we have a internal very very skilled body shop (atelier).

It's quite normal to see small differences between metallic painted plastic and metal surface.

It depends by the type of surface and by the degree of heat transmission that influences how metal particles are positioned after spraying.

Moreover, the plastic parts are often painted in different plants from those of the metal parts and this also influences the final effect.

It can only be seen in certain light conditions and viewing angles.

It involves a short drive, but I take your point about looking at it under sodium lighting.

When they sprayed the bumper, there was a small lacquer drip that is going to have to get fixed by them at the end of the month plus a few other things.

Anyway, something isn’t right with it, but unless I can replicate the fault when I take it into the main dealer, it’s open to the suggestion it’s a trick of the light or camera.

Think the boot is aluminium, the bit that’s effected, Plastic and the nearside wheel arch your normal car metal. I just find it difficult to believe that it’s normal.

The thing is the car came with a marked bumper and went into the dealership pronto for replacement, so I can’t remember what it looked like before.

It can be very difficult to replicate exactly the factory finish on a repainted panel, the fact it is a different material compounds the problem but its not an excuse for it to be wrong. A lot will depend on how far you are prepared to push. Some colours/finishes are more difficult than others to repaint satisfactorily. My first D3 was damaged on the drivers door when it was in for service, it took about four attempts, and the whole vehicle side had to be repainted before I accepted it back

Thanks, it is the Narvik Black, the non metallic paint. I went for that because I honestly can’t tell the difference between that and the Santorini Black apart from one is no cost and the other costs. Laughing

The dealer still talks to me - just, I also had problems with the boot and front bumper alignment, creased leather in the 2nd row, trailer hitch not enabled etc. They took it in and nearly three weeks later I got it back.

The rear bumper was renewed, but they didn’t do most of the other faults plus I ended up with white grease type stuff along the rear opening.

It’s going in for another go at a repair at the end of the month, primarily for the lacquer drip, bumper alignment etc. expected to take a week. I then discovered the paint difference. I am just getting Censored off with it all.

Ah! if it is not metallic paint my explanation is not so true......

There may be slight differences but not evident as in the case of metallic paint.

Some bodyshops use cheaper copy paints that can cause this problem

The trouble is I’ll never find out. I think the most I can do is moan on when it goes in at the end of the month and ask it gets fixed. It’s going to another main LR dealership in the same franchise, which I get on with quite well.

The bottom line is it shouldn’t be like this even if it’s a rare event, particularly as it’s a new car.
