Pay at Pump Limits
Took the D3 to Tesco's last night for some Christmas shopping and filled up with Diesel while there. Had to pay 3 times.
Got to £99, and stopped, so had to pay. Started again got to £99 and stopped again, so had to pay. Started yet again and finished up paying the last £17.25.
Why can't they just let me fill up in one go.

Would explain that. PITA in Sweden where the limit is SEK395/£35 a time on some of the automats, but here £99 would be ok for 99.9999999999999% of car drivers.

Jeez and I was complaining that I hit over the 100 Euro mark here in Ireland filling up from empty
I used a Diesel card which will bring that below €100 when I get the bill in the new year.

Might be a bit of both.
Or just seeing how many peeps it can annoy before DG wields his mod like powers.

Im interested in hearing more about this long range tank, can you explain exactly how it works? Does it use its own pump and is there some sort of change over switch? How do you measure what is left in aux tank please.
Sorry for all the questions but i think this tank would fit an L320 Sport 2003 BMW M5- 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

I seem to average €85 for about 65 L roughly once a week. If I had a long range tank I’m sure it would be double

Looked at this some yrs back for my RRS but was led to believe that it would not fit.
Also some probs with condensation build up in spare tank, from memory more a prob if not used regularly.
Hopefully some of the Southern hemisphere members can shed more light on it as they tend to fit them more than UK by farD4 Landmark MY16 Santorini Black THE LAST

It's a very simple system. There is a "Y" piece fitted to the inlet pipe so both tanks get filled. Then there is a transfer pump which is manually triggered when the main tank runs empty. I trigger it when the reserve light comes on. There is no gauge fitted to the AUX tank, but as it's around 80L, once you have transferred it to the main tank you know it's empty. It fits where the spare wheel goes, so you'll need a rear swing away wheel carrier on the the back for the spare. I'm not sure this will fit in a L320.

To answer the original question is very simple. Your card has to be authorised with your card provider before you start to fill. To be authorised there has to be an amount, there is no such thing as open ended authorisation, so the retailer chooses a number they see as appropriate, in this case £99.
If, as in your case, the retailer were to set the authorise amount to £220 so you could fill up in one go, everyone that turns up wanting say £20 and only has £100 available in their account would be declined before they started. Not good for the retailer or the customer.
The way round this would be for the pump to ask first: How much would you like to authorise? You could then fill up to this limit if it were approved. Unfortunately this is seen as too complicated and unnecessary for most people to do at the pump.
You are the exception not the norm. Therefore you have to live with it.

In Finland you get to choose the authorization limit before you fill up from like 4-5 choices (40, 60, 90, ..). It works similar if one is using a mobile app instead of physical credit card.
You’re charged for what you actually pump and obviously the pump will turn off at the authorization limit.
