PC in Vehicle for Navigation Etc

I recently bought an Asus EeePC with an 8.3 inch screen with the intention of fitting it to the disco. To date I have made a fitting to hold it and obtained an in car charger for it. I have installed OziExplorer together with the Haema Australia 4WD map collection and the UBD Australian City Streets and using a bluetooth dongle and bluetooth sat reciever this now works succesfully in moving map mode.
Additionally using a Telstra wireless modem I have internet on the run and using a USB phone should give me VOIP access.
Music files are stored as mp3's on the hard drive.
There is still an issue to overcome viewing the screen in bright sunlight and am now looking at masking of some sort.
Pictures are in my gallery (jocurran) as I haven't been able to put them in this post yet (Please somebody tell me how)
Hope this may be of interest to members Very Happy

Australia 2007 LR3 TDV6 HSE Auto Java BlackLR3

Hi,

How does the EEE PC fit in the dash? .... I probably should look at the pics!

I am running a Kenwood 702 in there at the moment, as this was in the car when I got it. I have a 7" Screen connected to a Atom based CarPC to place in there and plan to run:
- OziExplorer for offroad maps
- Centrafuse for on-road navigation etc.

Cheers,
AP

Powella if you want to send me your email address by pm I'll send you some photos of the installation.
Was interested in you mentioning "centrafuse" as I had not heard of it before and am now checking it out

Those "roo-bars" are useful for all sorts of things. Evil or Very Mad

I had my D3 parked across my driveway while some concrete was curing. Apparently, some scrote realised too late that it wasn't going to move for him. Twisted Evil I have some paint deposited on the bar - no other damage. Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

Looked at the ee-pc but there are some connectors at the back making it difficult to fit in the top glove box. Got the dell mini 9 which has all the connections on the sides, fits neatlt in the top gove box. I run with a touch screen.

My Eee PC has only the power supply plug at the rear all the other connectors are on the sides so did not find that to be a problem, and mounting it on the dash where the sat nav screen would fit saves me having to have a second screen as well, the only problem with the PC was that it was not bluetooth enabled so have to use a dongle in one of the USB ports which means that together with the modem and phone all the ports are used.

You could use a USB Hub to connect others.

Just be careful of how many and what dvices you connect to it, as unpowered hubs are limited due to the need to take power from the laptop, power the hub, and power what ever else is connected to the hub.

I think with usb connections for modem, bluetooth and Usb phone that should be enough so there should be no need to use a USB hub, also checked out Centrafuse and decided that Oziexplorer, Haema and UBD software together with Fiefox, Thunderbird and Media player 11 give me all that is required for my use though I could always add Estinator as a stand alone product Very Happy

Bright sunlight an issue?

Try these guys... http://www.hoodmanusa.com/

I've got a number of their products for my work. They might not do something for the screen you have but they have so many different applications one is nearly always right for any size of screen. Hope that helps.
