Here is the worst bit on Stannage. The Range Rover eventually needed to winch to free itself. Waffles made it a little easier, but did not want to risk the D3 on this so reversed back 1/2 mile!

This is Stannage, you need your sound on for full effect!

Oooooo nasty He was going a tad fast though ...for momentum I hope.....really shows why we enjoy the beauty of the D3 "crawl factor"
I notice in your gallery Gareth that you have a roof box on your rack ...do you have the size and what space is left available on the rack?21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Yes, momentum is a requirement on Stannage.
The Roofbox is a Halfords box (I can't remember the size, I will check tonight.) I had to 'modify' the roof rack to accept it. The bar that runs across the rear of the rack needs removing for the box to fit. I drilled out the pop rivets, and removed the bar. If I want to refit this bar when the box is not required, then self tapping screws do the job nicely.
The rack has got the aluminium base fitted, I drilled this base to accept the standard U bolts. I also had to move the position on the U bolts on the box to miss the cross bars in the rack.
I have since found out that you can get some bolts that fit into the T section on the rack, and could then be used to fasten the box down. Either way works well, except I have to have a pair of small hands available to fit the U bolts under the alloy tray. (Kids have their uses sometimes).
I found the setup was great last week. I had the caravan awning in the box nice and dry, along with 5 camping chairs. Alongside the box I secured the awning poles. I can also fit 2 cycle carriers close together alongside the box if I remove the pedals from the bikes.

Thanks for that ...I am thinking of removing the rails and upstands beyond the front dam by drilling out the rivets as you have described. I really fancy having the capability to put a tent up there in a similar way that Penguin has mounted his Maggiolina.21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

The news is that a D3 could probably get up Stannage, but it would need a lot of protection. I did not want to take mine after watching my colleagues bumping and scraping up in lifted D1's and Range Rover Classic. The lane has deteriorated and the rocks are very exposed.
So I retreated honorably and reversed back down again
Just caught up on this one.
Unlucky Gareth - so the big prize is still to be had then? Just needs someone with more money than sense to crack it... (not me in this case) Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

Nooo, that thing is the invincible Thunderbird 3, it goes anywhere any time no matter what the consequences!
Thunderbird 2 died on Houndkirk Moor from a broken heart a year ago last weekend (by broken heart I mean 8 throbbing cylinders, 6 left IN the engine)

Hey! - That looks great.
I'm sure if I go I can crack it ...as long as it's on the way down [not up]!
BUT .... I'll be using my 's-works stumpjumper' ..... no it's not a 'special edition D3'!!

From my encounters, the best lanes in the area for MTB are, Stannage, Roych Clough and Chapel Gate. I am sure there are many more, but you will need to look them up.
They are particularly suicidal on Roych Clough
