Worryingly, nearly 200,000 have already signed it!

There is a counter-petition (to keep them open) at https://chn.ge/2DSgszy

I doubt that either petition will have any real effect though. Rolling Eyes

They are not just against 4x4s. They are trying to be a campaign group.

Personally I think that the time has come to close these ancient roadways to motorised activities unless their is some compelling access requirement. The only reason people take their 4x4 and motorbikes on them is to test their off road ability and have some fun. The original purpose of these 'roads' was to get people from A to B by foot, horses or drive to livestock. Just because they are classified as a 'road' under some old laws doesn't make them suitable for motorised vehicles.

If people want to test their skills then their is always the Pay and Play.

That's fair enough provided the policy is applied evenly to all rights of way and all types of user. None of the public rights of way were created for recreational use. In their time, they were all for people going about their business. So let's close them (and Indeed the whole countryside) to recreational users. That includes ramblers, mountain bikers, horse riders and motorised users equally.

Or.....how about we maintain these ancient public rights of way to a reasonable standard and welcome visitors to our countryside including those with mobility problems who can only explore off the beaten track in a vehicle?

Not really but there is no point debating it because your minds are closed.

You have made a decision and are not prepared to debate - so whose mind is closed then??
