Petrol in a Diesel HSE - DOH!!

Guys,

This is on behalf of a friend of mine.

Yes he did fill it with Petrol not Diesel as it should have been.

Yes he did run the engine and drive it until it stops> oh boy.

Any ideas on what damage may have been done.

We are assuming LR will not honour the warranty.

We are going to drain the tank, then the system, then flush with fresh diesel.

Then refill. We are then going to look at the injectors, and glow plugs.

Any other ideas of what may have got damaged and any other advice would be most welcome.

Of course all I can say is DOH!!

Thanks in advance.

Nigel.

Catalytic converter & lambda sensor *may* be damaged or have their life shortened... no way to tell until you run it. if it appears to have less power, change the sensor first. If heat can be felt through the floor above the Cat. - change it!! otherwise engine damage WILL result
Also, don't forget the fuel filter...
It would also be wise to add 0.5 litres of engine oil to the full tank of diesel to re- lubricate the fuel pumps and the injectors

also, as it's a common rail system, i'd advise against removing the injectors - they can be an absolute @rse to re-pressurise

ouchhh

I was speaking to a LR technician last week, he said someone had done the same and brought it in for a "patch up" as he would not pay to do the full job.
He said the engine sounded pretty bad with injector and pump damage but was deemed OK to continue driving.
Is there any way you can claim on your car insurance, just a thought.

I know someone who has done the same in a NEW RR. The repair was quoted to me at around £10,000 at the local dealer!

Just done a quick search on the internet and found the following thread on another forum. It would appear that this could be rather costly to rectify but it looks like your friend could claim on his insurance to get the engine sorted.

have a look at this link for further info.

If you flick through many of the car forums, this happens more often than you'd think. Why dont they just have different nozzles and filler tops for DERV and Petrol?

It's 2005! It's a low-tech solution and would save people loads of money and distress! Rolling Eyes

That would be a good idea and it would appear that it has been researched, presume it has not been implemented due to cost.

Clarkson on top gear had a solution last week.
A light activated box that said something like "this car uses diesel" when you open the fuel flap.
He hit it with a hammer saying people shouldn't be so stupid as to buy diesel cars in the first place.

To be absolutely honest, I came within a gnats nuts of doing the same the other day - I stopped at a BP station, and wanted to fill with Ultimate Diesel.

How similar do the Ultimate Unleaded and Ultimate Diesel pumps look? It was not until I read the label attached to the nozzle that I realised I was about to fill with UL Shocked

Could have cost me big time, and I have been using ultimate for a year now! Very easy to make a mistake - be warned.

For info - my brother in law works for BP and due to the enourmous amount of people that have mistakenly filled there cars with ultimate diesel rather than unleaded and the other way around they will compensate!! and have done on a number of occaisions.

Also my dad filled his sclass merc up to the top with petrol- drove until it stopped on the A1- the tank was drained, flushed and refilled and it runs no differently. May be his was just lucky. Question

update on petrol in diesel

Guys,

Thanks for all the feedback.

We fixed my friends car yesterday.

Basically we drained the entire system of Petrol, by disconectinting the fuel supply line to the fuel rail, removed the fuel pump relay and bridged it.

We then pumped the whole tank dry of the petrol.

The only conceren was if petrol had got itnto the Fuel Burning Heater, so we disconecetd the fule line to that too and drained it.

We assumed that as the engine was run with petrol during the day and that the temp was over 10C the FBH had not kicked in.

We then put another 10 litres of diesel in the tank, and pumped all that through and out of the system.

Finally we reconected the fuel lines, and put 20 litres of fule in the tank, togetether with a high quality diesel cleaning addative.

Some trepidation when we reinstalled the fuel relay, and turned the key for the first time, as we heard the system prime with the diesel.

However one more turn of the key, and she fired into life first time.

It took a few seconds for the system to sort it self out, and settle to an idle, but once it did it ran fine.

We let her run for about 10 mins, during which time the FBH kicked in with the usual puff of smoke and gurgles etc.

We did a quick road test and she now seems to run fine, in fact it seems quicker and more lively than before.

So thanks again for all the help, and we can breathe a sigh of relief.

All the best.

Nigel.
