Pick up tomorrow, ideas for off road / expedition prep??

Hi all,

Brand new member here. Just want to say first off, have been surfing this site for the past few weeks and what a forum! Previously a defender owner, this is by far the best site of its kind i have come across. Well done all. Thumbs Up

I pick up my 54plate Disco 3 TDV6 S tomorrow (Saturday). Already looking for ideas to expedition prep it. used to do some humanitarian aid work abroad in my defender days and would like to continue in the disco, as well as have a play Wink
Already got a few ideas, ie the basics...... G4 roof rack, mantec G4 RAI, Underbody protection (should i save and get the fullkit from mantec or is the front guard enough?) Looks like a lot of members have this so would welcome comments / pics.
Is the G4 rack capable of supporting a howling moon roof tent? Any ideas? Im sure it could be modified Whistle if not.
Love the light set up posted under 'lightforce' heading on here. What are the best lights and where?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

Steve

Some say the Front Runner is the best rack, the Expo rack may not lend itself to a roof tent due to the raised sides. Lightforce lamps are really 8) The underbody protection can be expensive, but if you are serious about use then worth it.

I am sure the DISCO3 stunt team will be along shortly with many opinions and options.

Welcome Thumbs Up

Thanks Gareth,

TBH thought a lot of frontrunner racks on defenders, i myself always used patriot, excellent team and great quality racks. Just love the look of the G4 rack on the disco 3. Really blends in well.
Looks like the full mantec underbody protection is priced at around £1000.00. Havent managed to find any posts rating it though. Lots about the front plate which it seems is very popular and was subject of a group buy that i missed out on Sad
Look forward to the stunt teams comments. Very Happy

Not many have full underbody protection, and the D3 seems to keep its important bits clear of the ground most of the time. It depends how serious you want to be.

I have only the Mantec front plate, and it has saved my bumper a few times. I have no other protection underneath and have suffered no other damage. However, I have seen a few dinted fuel tanks and broken heat shields on other cars. I do general green laning in mine, and also have done a few off-road courses in its time.

One thing about the expo rack is the wind noise is quite apparent at higher speeds. I believe the FR rack is the same. Some say a piece of material under the front of the rack to stop the wind getting under it may help.

Obvious benefit of the FR for me over the G4 is it can def be used for a roof tent which i really want.
However Devon 4x4 doing a really good deal on the G4 rack at the moment for forum members so really not sure. If someone says they have a g4 roof rack and roof tent combo and ity works ok then i will probably go for that. Surely someone out there in disco land must have tried it?
