Pirelli Scorpion wear rate

Sad
I've only done 11000 mls in my '06 D3 "S", and the factory fit Scorpions are pretty worn. Fronts are at 3-3.5mm and rears at 4.5-5mm on average. My worry is the wear on the o/s front - the inside edge is about 1mm less than the rest of the tyre and on both fronts the centre of the tread is less than the shoulders. Has anyone got any thoughts? I had geometry issues from new and had the dealer adjust it twice. Thing is, I think it was never right, 'cos I feel the "sweet spot", where the steering feels just right was lost. I see posts talk about needing the dealer's equipment to do the alignment check - is there no-one else who can do it, for instance a tyre specialist with 4-wheel equipment Question Crying or Very sad

If the centre of the tyre is wearing more than the edges it is usually because the tyre is over inflated Confused

Pirellis do wear at an appalling rate anyway, but i would put a proper tyre gauge (not one at a garage) on the fronts and see what it says, there is no reason to run higher pressure at the front than LR recommend Thumbs Up

Thanks SJR. I use my own digital gauge - garage types are abused. So 11000mls from the Scorpions is not really abnormal Question

Any thoughts on the inside shoulder wear only on the o/s tyre Question

I saw a recent post mentioning Toyo Proxes tyres. Any thoughts for road use Question

Pirellis seem to give between 15k to 20k miles before they need replacing.

I have no experience of the Toyo's so cannot comment on them, however another cheap tyre that i do have experience of is the General Grabber AT2. Whilst it is an All Terrain tyre is is totally happy on the road, even at (and above) motorway speeds, Had mine on for about 7k miles so far, and they still look like new and have hardly worn at all, only negative is losing about 1mpg and extremely slight increase in road noise.

Might be worth getting your local dealer or suitably equipped independent to have a look a the alignment to see if there are any underlying issues causing the shoulder wear on the o/s tyre Thumbs Up

Hmmm. Not sure about that. My Scorpion zeros were changed at 26,000 having 2mm front, 3mm rear. My current set have done 15,000 including being really abused 'blue light' driving and are still at about 4mm. Definitely get your 4-wheel alignment done. Simple tracking at local tyre shop no good - need much more advanced geometry at a specialist. LR often contract out to a local company - try and find which one your normal dealer uses.

& I thought I'd been diddled with 24k miles on my D3 Scorpions..actually they were lethal from about 21k
11k is unreal
I realise fully that a D3 is a heavy pice of kit & cant expect high milages
I went for Vredestiens myself.....good price, excellent grip in the wet...told they are awesome in snow
 BREXIT - done properly.

D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

BLFarrar - what's the wear like on the Vredensteins?
I fancy those on mine next time if they wear better than Scorpions

Far too early to say yet as have only 4k miles on them....but others on here have had the same make & type of tyre for well over a year......so far the wet road grip (no planing) is superb & they corner well without squeal....just waiting for some snow & ice. Seem quiet on the open motorway

My experience with Vredestiens goes back well before my love affair with land-rovers & on High milage Volvos they always gave vast milage with awesome grip (they were al Mud+Snow) the only downside I have ever had is that they tend to block over & sound a bit military (not good in northern Ireland where I did most of this motoring
....maybe 450k miles worth of driving on these!

.......the only alternative was some Gislaveds given to me by Volvo when I complained my 760 Volvo wouldn't go in the snow..these were weird skinny tyres on a big car - Censored me they were awsome....they laste three winters...it just knowing how to complain I guess
 BREXIT - done properly.

With scorpions I am on 22K miles and tehre are still few mm to go...

Instead of AT2, I may put some ATR (it seems there are no difference on road handling and fuel consumption
