Is it usually obvious if the pollen filter has just been changed or not?

Picked our D3 up on Saturday and it was 'serviced' last week by the main dealer, being a synical sod was wondering if they would have bothered changing it as it is out of sight Wink

Top side should be dusty or even almost black.

I guess the first question is whether you were charged for a new pollen filter? If so, then the top side of the filter should be pretty clean. Dirty filters are just that - dusty and or discoloured on the top side. I would note however that a suggested service requirement that the pollen filter be replaced is not quite the same as the dealer automatically installing a new oil filter with an oil change - and even that is sometimes in doubt.

I would say that for the pollen filter to be actually replaced, that the vehicle owner would have to formally request that it be done.

This is for two reasons,

A) the filter costs money, and there are two kinds, the cheap one that is actually just a filter, and the expensive one that is both a filter and air smell remover - in other words, constructed with a filter "cloth" of some sort and also a layer of activated charcoal, (or something like that), within the layers to remove smells etc.

B) quite often the vehicle owner changes the filter themselves and the dealer wants to charge for doing so; hence the dealers have learned after being blasted by owners who self changed a couple of months previous, that pollen filter replacement is something to distance themselves from.

Thank you bbyer Thumbs Up
The service was part of the buying deal and was due anyway.

I have had a look and it seams clean so looks like they have changed it Thumbs Up
Don't know which one it is as there were no markings on it relating to the 2 different part numbers earlier in this thread.
Have also checked the air filter which has not been changed but does not look too bad and is not down to be done on the 75k service anyway so no problems there.

Very pleased with their prep on the whole, the only thing outstanding is a bit of suspension knock, hopefully the ARB bushes so no big deal.

I would suggest that anyone also gets the air-con unit sanitised, as this is a harbour for germs as well.
Local dealer has a fogging type machine that they leave in the car with the air-con switched on, which in turn disinfects the air way system.

Not sure how regular this should be carried out though?

You could probably use something like this........

http://www.f10biocare.co.uk/af.html

Put system onto recirculate and spray in cabin. F10 was originally used in hospitals for sterilising catheter tubes etc, but we now use it with the birds, for fogging/nubulising as a preventative treatment for Aspergillus. It is safe for animals to inhale the fumes and ingest at correct mixing ratios, so don't see any reason why it shouldn't work for the air-con system.
