Poor Fuel Economy and black smoke on acceleration

Hi all

I'm still trying to sort my 54plate tdv6 disco. I've just changed the front suspension arms and track rods, at least it goes round corners better now!

I am getting roughly 21mpg when my wife (miss daisy) drives and 18mpg when I do, it doesn't seem to improve on long runs, even when resetting the trip.

I get a large ammount of black smoke when pulling away anything other than gently.

I've blanked the egr valves.

Is this right? It doesn't "feel" quite right either, any pointers??

That ain't right, and it's a good 6 mpg down too.

I'd suggest checking the air filter, intercooler (for blockages), air hoses (for delamination) and turbo (nozzles seized). You'll need a diagnostic system to check for the last.

Whatever the cause is, the poor car's being starved of air and is massively over-fuelling in an attempt to compensate ...

Mick

I'd second the air filter. LR recommend changing every 45K - which is daft. Chances are yours may have done almost 45K on the current one Shocked

Ill second the possibilitys of an intercooler hose delamination, splits or split cooler, and at worse which i doubt the turbo.

Agreed not right at all....

Air filter was changed a couple of weeks ago, i've checked the main intercooler hose where visible but no sign of a split.

Do MAF's fail on the disco?

You need to check inside the pipe as when it delaminates it blocks internally.

guys, my 09 model, with just 10k on the clock is below average for economy in my mind. Ok on a steady run, but around town (when having to use the right pedal) is high teens at best. When I do floor it, there's so much gunk out the back I loose sight of the cars behind, but I wouldnt say its black smoke, more greyish.

Been back to the stealers who say no issues found/faults logged.

Would a turbo hose be delaminating this early in its life?

Al

PS, filter is good, ITG profilter fitted.

Tis a possibility, Al. The only sure way is to pull them off for a look-see ...

Re: Poor Fuel Economy and black smoke on acceleration

I take it you had a 4 wheel alignment done after changing the arms etc?

If the alignment is out, of are effectively scrubbing the tyres as you drive along, causing more drag, hence higher fuel consumption...

Also, did you remove the pipe that goes from the EGR valve to the inlet butterfly? I forgot to clip that in once (at the butterfly end), caused lack of power and loads of smoke Embarassed Just a thought

and if you've blanked the EGR's, have you taken the butterfly out, or at least fixed it open, as you wont be getting any air through to mix with the deisel when the EGR's are open (as you've blanked them off) and the butterfly closed.

Alignment was done, by stealer.

Butterfly is out and just rechecked the egr connectors..all ok

I've taken the top connection off the main hose and put endoscope down, looks ok.

Was hoping for an intercooler full of clay, but that looks very clean too.

The only thing i've noticed is some oil staining down in the passanger side of the intercooler, I assume that if oil can get out, so can air. Just going to dig a bit further now.
