How to prevent turbo blowing ??

This forum is great, all the references to the most common faults on the D3 have happened to mine in one form or another, luckily sorted under tesco warranty so far, or just ignored (EPB).

As far as the turbo is concerned is there anything preventative that can be done to minimise turbo faults?

2005 D3, 103,000 miles.

Apart from buying a V8, you are at the mercy of whoever screwed the thing together! All sorts of advice on here re how to prevent it failing, some contradictory ISTR. Just don't leave home without a warranty that covers it. Both of my 06MY D3s had new turbos within weeks of each other, both driven completely differently. It's a lottery and a turbo could fail at few k miles or survive 300k, it's in the lap of the gods!

I will tell you what i do to try and minimise Turbo failure,

Every time when starting from cold go easy on the acc pedal, wait till the engine Oil has got to op temp,

Please dont do what my neighbour did, starting from cold foot on pedal flat to boards so the thing roars like a lion,

And the opposite, when its been on a good run at speeds or under load back off for 5 mins before reaching youre destination and let the oil cool it down a bit with its flow through the casing, then on pull up let it idle for a minute then switch it off.

I have stuck to this since owning a couple of RS Turbo's in the early 90's through integrales and an RS4.

Good luck !

Thumbs Up

I do most of that and mine blew, similarly JMC would have done so as he knows about these things, it blew. Problem is if the reliability is not there, it's not there no matter what you do. Sorry Mr Grumpy is back but LR & turbos are not a good mix, even the D4 is having turbo issues!

I understand about the reliability isues, i know most owners will follw a similar procedure to try and defeat the inevitable, The question is ?

Is there a more reliable unit to replace it when it goes POP ! or is it a matter of having it rebuilt properly after the event !

It is a little worrying how so many of us expect mechanical failures with a D3, the turbo being one area that is often raised. I can't help but reflect back on a Landcruiser Amazon that I ran for over 130k and when I both visited the dealer and called the turbo manufacturer about a noise which I suspected as the turbo about to go, both said it would be very unlikely to have a turbo fault at such a low mileage. They were right, it was a lose clip. I get the impression from here that the D3 reliability/durability is much more of a lottery than with most vehicles, but I do accept that from an electrical side, it's a dam complex truck.

There is a software update for the variable vane actuator. Exercises it to stop it siezing with carbon.
